    Someone nicked my....

    NUMBER PLATES

Nothing special about them either....they even went to the trouble of unscrewing them from the car too...no evidence of screws on the ground or in the car.

So I've had to get new plates and screws (£18) and also file a crime report over the phone with the police.

d'ya think someone is wanting to *clone* my old toyota?

someone wants to hide who they are while driving. Moreover they want to appear to be someone else. Best be prepared for a call from plod. If you haven't already called and informed them I would do so promptly. Might save you a bit of a headache down the line.

Most common use is to use them to fill up with petrol and do a drive off, then dump the plates. When they run out of petrol they just repeat the process. If you're going to clone a stolen car its most likely they wouldn't use stolen plates.

How else would you do it?

You'd have to have cloned plates to 'clone' a car??

folk doing drive offs tend to be 'chavs' who couldn't really give a toss what the stolen plate refers to. The plate could be for a blue Transit while they're driving a red Escort. They just need a plate on the car for when they drive to and from the garage. If you're cloning a car you obviously want plates for a car of the same make/model/colour/age. It doesn't make sense to steal the plates for the car you're cloning because it attracts attention to that registration.

Not if the car they were cloning was a K reg Toyota...

You'd have to actually look at the chassis plates and match them up to the registration wouldn't you??

If a cop car looked up the reg of a stolen car, without cloned plates, then it will come up as a stolen car. If the stolen car had gss03's number plates on it, it'd go undetected... as long as gss03 had a clean slate..

If the cops are doing their job right there will be a little note on the computer record to state that the plates on gss03's car may refer to both the original car AND another vehicle on false plates. Its bad news for gss03 cos it means he's more likely to get pulled. In the old days car ringing usually meant a decent mechanic spending a bit of time changing engine/chassis numbers to match up with the V5. These days you're more likely to just get the plates changed and then forge the V5 and the excise licence so that all the the numbers match. Obvious benefit being that none of the numbers looks like they've been altered.
