Advice Needed, Selling My Car On Ebay, Zero Feedbackers

    Hello all,

I am selling my old Range Rover on ebay, about 6 years ago I helped to sell my mothers car on ebay as well. That went fine but did have some funny offers like, "I will bank transfer double the money it is worth from Spain and my friend will pick it up" I did not reply to that.

This time I listed it on Friday and it has had one bid and lots of views.

Part I need advice on is a zero feedback person who only joined yesterday (1st Sep) wants to view the car, I know this is normal but such a new member. Is he real and only joined to buy my car?

There is not a day goes past that there is a new scam reported about ebay. Old range rover are quite easy to steal and the only information I know about him is a email address maybe a phone number.

Am I being paranoid? Like the person who is the highest bidder at the moment has just got a go kart and a trailer from viewing what he has won before so has need of a towing Range Rover. I would let him view the car.

Love to hear your feedback on this.

Re: Advice Needed, Selling My Car On Ebay, Zero Feedbackers

I know what you mean. I have a trailer tent for sale at the moment and once I've shown someone the trailer it'd be quite easy for them to come around and put it on the back of a low loader and then drive away with it. Although I have mine on Gumtree.

He might have joined just to buy a car, it might or might not be yours. Why not get a wheel clamp or something else that will not let the car be stolen? Like take the battery lead off the battery.

Or maybe get some storage for the car while it's in the selling process? My local safe store securely houses cars and I don't think it's a massive amount.
Could you find a garage to rent locally to store it in for a few weeks perhaps?

    Just some thoughts.

Re: Advice Needed, Selling My Car On Ebay, Zero Feedbackers

It is in a car space with post up behind it, steering wheel lock bar, battery has locking terminal on it and Kill switch hidden on the car as well.

Also if he comes around he would want a test drive, that is where does he have insurance to cover the car? it is insured but cover to drive other cars 3rd party is not offered that much anymore, some stiil think you get it automatic on full comp.

As the car is already selling I do not think I will reply to this person

Meet him at a large car park or industrial estate so he can drive it off road? Make sure you don't go alone, etc.

This. If you're really paranoid meet on a car park half way or a nice empty business park. It means you can also not worry quite so much about insurance if he wants to hop in the drivers seat because you're on private land.

As far as them joining eBay to "case the joint" goes as it were I suppose it's possible, if it were a Defender I'd be more paranoid because they're even easier to steal and strip down to sell on and there's been a rash of Defender thefts of the last couple of years for precisely those reasons. Old Range's aren't often stolen to order though and there's easier and less visible ways to check out a car you'd like to steal than arranging a test drive on eBay.

Just ask them to bring both parts of their drivers license and a copy of insurance valid to drive someone else's car. Take a copy/photo of them all before letting them drive. You can do the other sensible things like not giving them the key until you're both strapped in the front seats, having a couple of friends round at the time.

Not that any of that happened when I bought a car someone was advertising on autotrader, he gave me the keys and said have a good look around and left me too it. Didn't have insurance at the time he he took me out, but it was only honesty stopping me driving off.

I really do get annoyed at time wasters on ebay. Ebay is really coming to the forefront of just selling new stuff on there. I find it difficult to sell something on there quite a lot. Slightly off topic... I sold an old Xbox on ebay the other month and the guy returned it "because the screws had been taken out and put back in".

If you've got it secured then what jimbouk said about the license and insurance proof is fair to me and anyone who is sensible about buying and coming for a test drive.

You can create a rule so that people under vertain feedbakc cannot bid on your items

Re: Advice Needed, Selling My Car On Ebay, Zero Feedbackers

Another update, one day to go and real bids have been coming in. It's up to £700 pound which is not bad for an 25 year old Range Rover, hoping for about £1200.

Wish me luck all, I hope I wont need it. But you never know with ebay.

Re: Advice Needed, Selling My Car On Ebay, Zero Feedbackers

Well my old Range Rover sold today Ebay £1000 not a bad price, I paid £2000 11 years ago. It went to a guy in Kent I have sent a message with my phone number and such.

I will miss driving a big car around, wont miss the 7mpg much.

Seems it has all went well.

Ebay can be a dodgy place some times. my wife bought a S4 last week and the seller has not sent it but took the £210 for it.

Thank god for the ebay resolution center. That seems to help a lot.

Re: Advice Needed, Selling My Car On Ebay, Zero Feedbackers

And so our story ends, Steve contacted me first on Tuesday and then today (Thursday) to collect the car, he turned up when he said and him and his son looked over the car. They was both happy and handed over the money. Which my wife counted as she is Ex bank staff, come to think about it she still has hold of it lol.

Thanks for your support and advice, I needed a outlet for my steam.

Re: Advice Needed, Selling My Car On Ebay, Zero Feedbackers

Glad it was sold with no drama.
Only £1000 in depreciation over a decade of driving is impressive.

    I wouldn't miss 7 mpg either!

I'd REALLY need to work to get my car to 7 mpg! (I'm not going to try however).
