Fiat Chrysler is to recall 1.1 million vehicles as they might roll away

Not a good 12 months for the car industry:

You wonder how some people get dressed in the morning. Relying solely on the gearbox is pretty dumb. This is the thing in question:

Not sure how you could mistake it for anything else.

Gear-selection is conveyed to drivers by indicator lights, not gear-selector position, which may lead drivers to falsely assume vehicles are in park, the company said. Vehicles deliver warning chimes and messages if driver-side doors are opened while engines are still running and park is not engaged.
I could see how this kind of shifter may be problematic, with those accustomed to whacking a typical auto shifter forwards in to park may accidently put this type of shifter in to neutral.

Still, I think it's more a problem of what's in the driver's seat than the car.

Well, technically , from what I gather, the vehicles affected don't have a "hand" brake, i.e. a lever on the centre console, but rather a parking brake pedal in the foot well.

Anyway, I know what you mean and to answer the question; I don't know, but there's at least 314 of them.

EDIT: The parking brake pedal can just about be seen in the background next to the 'problem' shifter.
