Normal autos are fine. The DSG in the passat (and most VW range) is known for jerkiness at low speed, I'd avoid it for town driving, which is normally where you'd prefer an auto!
There's a fairly nice GTE version of the passat with 1.4 tsi + electric motor.

Congrats! Although you might want to hide your name and email address...
But you are still going to need to fill the gap for the next couple of years. I had an Auris Hybrid yesterday and today as a hire car. It was very competent, if not particular exciting. Then again, I wasn't really road testing it thoroughly.
My worst hire car was a C1 or C2 with an auto box; I could change gears quicker manually! However, it became more acceptable when I changed it to manual sequential shifting as I could then anticipate the slow gear change.

So, hire companies have codes for different grades of car. This is a SWAR - Standard, Wagon, Automatic, Aircon (fuel unspecified). (they were out of SDARs, 4/5 door instead of estate)
There *is* a code for something along the lines of a Volt - SDAH. But not a single major rental company in the UK has any H or E suffix vehicles in any sensible supply in their fleet. Or any matches for AGRN, the "anything at all for sandal-wearing hippies" special code.
Avis have a Yaris Hybrid, but only from the airport pickup locations, Hertz do best with Leaf or Outlander PHEV but also restricted to London & airports, and Thrifty have the i8... but I can't get the kids in that.
And guess how many A-suffix rentals (hydrogen) there are in the UK
