Great film from Chris Harris tonight. Which followed unwatchable screaming from Chris Evans. I really want to like Top Gear, but Evans needs to go.

Trying to decide whether to watch Germany or Top Gear last night when I realised I wasn't that bothered about missing Top Gear.

I think its no longer on my "not to be missed" list

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

I thought last night's episode was better, but the Audi section was probably the worst bit. Should have just let Sabine do that section. I thought the studio bit was better as well, and the Star in a... he seemed to just let Kevin Hart and Anthony Joshua run with it, and it was actually quite amusing.

I started to watch, but after 2 minutes of CE, I went to find something else. I'm sure CE is a perfectly pleasant bloke (and a friend who knew him says he is in real life) but I'm afraid his radio persona is irritating, his TV one even more so.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

Despite them doing 4 videos, the interview part still seemed too long. I also think it would work better in the way they did it before when they had two guests, where both of them are actually related rather than just two random ones.

It was amusing to see MB hold up really well with Ken Block and CE just loosing it whenever he is a passenger! I think that is the only way people will tolerate him; when he is being made to suffer!

I had to google that to see what the relevance was! Such is my interest in the life of 'celebs'.

I think they have too many presenters and too many celebritys, and Chris Evens talks to much!

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

ok so ep3 was better. the thing with mlb going round London just seemed stupid and contrived. it didn't say anything about the car or who the guy was or why he was doing it. just dumb stunt.

the hot hatch comparison was better and nice to have a definite conclusion. the CE throwing up was lame. just send the girl out and let her talk about it. the two celebs did really well and CE sitting back just worked much better. mlb is already getting better at doing the studio segways.

I do slightly wonder though that it's losing any depth about the cars. just something but there's less chat about the cars like enthusiasts would have. the engine type, whether it was the one before they changed to the different clutch in 1986 etc. even in the interviews clarkson would often have that level of chat- because he actually knows his cars.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

3 was another step in the right direction, I feel like the "celebrity" section is far too long, and it's not interesting. I could just about tolerate it before, but it's twice as long now.

The films were good, the cars were good, CE was awful again. The Ken Block bit was alright, but just looks like one of the many videos he has got on YouTube. Not sure what that bit was originally intended to be, but I do remember it getting in trouble so I imagine it's rather cut down.

The Mrs said there was "nothing entertaining in this one" and that it was "too much about cars". Which I suppose is good to some people, but probably something they want to avoid.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

so watched EP4. Awful. Absolutely awful.

Sabine is just annoying - under-my-skin grating annoying. Awkward commentary, bad delivery - not ideal for a main presenter
Eddie Jordan is more annoying still.
CE did a rubbish job of hosting the celebs section, Brian Cox started giving a really interesting anecdote about flying in a Typhoon towards Ireland and CE just cut him off. JC would have let that roll and bantered with it, but CE doesn't have that confidence to go with the flow. It's not a live broadcast! they have time to explore avenues and edit later. LAME.

The challenges are tepid compared to the old series, and there isn't the banter and dynamic that the old trio could bring to pass. The large team is too disjointed and there is no genuine camaraderie there.

The only good bit IMO was the Tesla X which was brilliant. Rory Reid again.... Chris Harris in the Vulcan was ok, but it lacked something compared to old series. It felt.... unfinished. Like they'd run out of time/budget/script writers.

IMO they need to ditch CE and EJ, limit Sabine to ragging cars on the track and just let MLB, RR and CH do everything else. Those three love their cars, know their cars, and actually have some screen presence.

Anyone know when the old trio launch their stuff on Amazon?

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

Caught up on a few more, along with the Extra gear stuff - which really shows that Rory is a nice fresh face for the series and should be hosting, and Chris Harris is a good counter part with his own style of presenting which is much more palatable than celebs. MLB can stay for some interest. So pretty much the same conclusion as ik9000 above!

I thought the Tesla review was good and balanced. A shame they didn't bring up the Tesla 3 briefly after the segment (maybe they did on BBC 3?). I especially liked him calling Tesla out on their slightly dumb publicity regarding the Falcon doors being useful in tight spaces, but the front doors still open normally!

be interesting to see how those falcon doors work in a low-headroom multi-storey carpark! I can see issues....
