It's better.. but I don't like the celebrity stuff.. which seemed to pervade most of the episode now so makes it harder to skip on iplayer!

I watched an episode a couple of weeks ago - better, but not enough to bookmark or add it to a 'must watch' list. I think I agree with Kalniel - too much 'celeb' stuff.

See I always found the celeb stuff boring but I don't think there's any more of it now, it's just split into smaller chunks. The downside is it's harder to skip, the upside is (IMO,) it's much less objectionable that way.

It's literally a thousand times better. Still it would be nice if they got someone like Robert Llewellyn for decent EV coverage.

It is amusing to see the D-List celebrities that they are dragging in.

Old Top Gear had Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The latest Top Gear's highlight was an embarrassed David Tennant..

Slightly unfair to David Tennant who is a respected member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as his role in Dr Who - he does have talent, rather than being famous for being famous.

He had been on at least twice during the old top gear with clarkson et al. He did alright IIRC, but still got beat by Billy Piper much to his chargrin.

I also didn't think he was a bad guest at all.
I really don't have any complaints for the guests so far this season.

IIRC the 'old' TG started getting the big hitters only because Jonathan Ross got suspended by the beeb. As a result they had a lot of big name guests booked for a chat show that wasn't airing. The next highest ratings BBC format that did interviews was Top Gear so they all got moved there.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

I am actually enjoying the New 'New' Top Gear, having the celeb bits in bite sizes seems to be a lot better. This week was Ross Noble, who was also on before, so not sure the 'no decent guests' thing stands. I've given up on TGT, I know it's on, but I just don't have the urge to watch it, whereas not that Call the Midwife has finished, there's nothing else to watch* at 8pm on a Sunday, so TG goes on.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

And a bit of a thread resurrection, but....

A year on - a new series, and having ignored the previous series, I am actually stating to enjoy this. If anything, mot=re than under the old presenters.

Matt LeBlanc is much less pompous tan Clarkson, and the relationship between the presenters seems warmer (yes, I know it was all staged and scripted) but it seems more genuine, and the cars do seem to have moved up into being more than just props for the presenters egos.

I might just make a point of watching, rather than just flicking through.

Agreed. I gave up on Grand Tour after 3 episodes as the hubris had been dialed up to 11.

    Room for both though.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

All I've seen is an odd clip here and there, and nothing I saw changed my decision about not watching it. What I liked about the old one was mainly the interaction between the three, and I have no interest in watching three wannabees trying to recreate, simulate, adapt, convert or top that.

Also, as I don't have, or particularly want, and am certainly not paying for yet more TV services like Anazon's thing, Netflix, etc, I haven't seen the old Clarkson TG trio in their new one either.

Know what? Life hasn't ended, the sky hasn't fallen in and I haven't had withdrawal symtoms so I'm forced to conclude that, what the heck, I don't really give a stuff.

I never found the old TG terribly informative about the cars, and while the larking about was amusing, it was also getting to be old hat.

So .... who cares? Not me, certainly.

If the Clarkson trio came back to BBC, I'd give it a try. Probably. But no, I'm not holding my breath. The chances are probably similar to me getting in Nobel price in medicine, and I'm not booking flights to Sweden just yet.

Otherwise, no TG from me, other than old series' I have on DVD.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

Well, they seem to be splitting them up for the videos; with Chris and Matt together and Rory just on his own. This evening's one with the 2CV actually seemed genuine for the most part between Chris and Matt when they were in the car. However, the one last week (I think) with Bigfoot seemed more forced. I still watch it and find it entertaining enough.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

Yes, I gave up on the grand tour, it was same old same old, but even more over the top.

It’s taken a couple of seasons and the departure of ChrisEvsns for the show to find its new feet. There is still a bit of larking about, but it seems better humoured and less forced.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

I genuinely enjoyed last night's episode, particularly the bit about the French car.

Chris Harris is a genuinely cool dude who I love to follow in the racing series he dips in and out of.

Matt LeBlanc is a bit full-on, but that's to be expected of any American presenter; he's still a million times more endearing than ginger-radio-2-guy ever was.

Rory Reid is still awkward in front of the camera, when in the studio, and seems a little left out, but he knows how to review a car and get his point across.

Anyone that's not given this latest series a chance - do so, it's "not as bad as you might think."
