EU proposes new safety features for new cars

Among those include automatic speed limiting by using cameras to read road side speed limits, and brake assistance to apply the breaks if a car is to close to the vehicle in front.

Because OCR is infamously 100% accurate in its reading of even best case document scans. This is why politicians shouldn't push for legislation that depends on/interferes with technology they have zero understanding of.

OCR works for ANPR applications - of course this measure may require the modification of road signs to make them more OCR friendly, although this hasn't been stated and is only my speculation.

*Usually* works. And that's just with bureaucratic systems that can be appealed. We can't throw potentially garbage inputs into automated driver control limits so glibly.

My car already does this, if I engage the systems. I wouldn't be too keen for these facilities to be switched on by default.

All of this stuff can be switched off. I don't see a problem with it being on by default. You can even force a burst of speed over the limit by stamping on the accelerator if you need to overtake/get out of the way quick.

It can at the moment - as I read it, and from other news reports, these systems will be required to be fitted and operational by default on all vehicles built from 2022 onwards.

Correct. Required to be fitted but you'll still be able to switch it off.

Re: EU proposes new safety features for new cars

I was saying to Mrs B0redom the other day that having my car's speed limiter directly linked to Waze or similar so when you go through zones which go 30-40-30-40-30-20-30-40 etc would be really useful. I can see it also being useful around areas where there's schools etc.

On the motorway at 11:30pm maybe not so much.

Yep thats correct, in fact you can turn the entire system off according to the BBC, it will just reset to on the next time you start the car. You can also push the accelerator hard to override it.

Re: EU proposes new safety features for new cars

My wife has a 2018 Tiguan, most of the driver aids I hate, especially stop/start that frequently nearly causes an accident when I try & pull out of a junction into busy traffic. Also probably increases engine wear as well.

Also lane assistance which can be very disconcerting when changing lanes without indicating (i.e. there's no traffic about) or it falsely reads lane markings on worn roads in bright sunlight and especially cold frosty days.

And the biggest bug bear is the fact that they don't permanently stay off once turned off. The next time you drive the car they've all be magically turned on again, so I have to spend another 5 mins deactivating them again.

Finally replacing tactile buttons & switches for controls with a touch screen is idiotic & downright dangerous. With tactile buttons & switches I can control something without taking my eyes off the road. But with a touch screen I have to look at the screen to ensures I'm touching the right button or I'm in the right menu etc. I flipping hate it and it should be banned.

For my next car I'm seriously considering buying a well maintained old car that has absolute minimal tech so that I can avoid all this crap. Alternatively if I can find a newish car without driver aids then this will move higher up wish list.

The cynic in me says that it is known in legislative terms as -

    Category - Wedge
    Sub-Category - Thin End
Date of amendment - ASAWCGAWI (*)

(*) As Soon As We Can Get Away With It.

Well, since 1963 British polluticians have traditionally enjoyed a good old screw...

TBH, I'd rather they just made all cars autonymous outright. That would at least require a country-wide superfast fibre broadband network, and while the car drives itself, I could simply sit back and have myself a good shuffle.... although there's even a machine that does that for me, as well: https://bit.ly/2OsgrEc

    GT86?
OK, it has some driver aids (stability control) but you can disable them. The only thing that's hard to disable is ABS, but that's not something I'd recommend doing in any event.

ABS & Stability control are perfectly fine, it's the more advanced stuff I'm talking about. I don't even mind if it's there's as long as I can permanently disable if I want to.
