I always wanted one, which is how I knew... took a good decade or so before I even got my car licence, though and I never returned to the idea.

Actually the newer ones with the 1.6 are about the most efficient car of it's size and height you can buy. They're likely no better off-road though.

I don't think the Imprezas have the ground clearance, an Outback or Forrester would be the sensible options, both have fairly powerful petrol options if that's your thing.

If the outback works, maybe something like a Volvo XC70 or Audi A6 Allroad would too.

    Panda Cross with Trailer maybe?

Over 50mpg normally, capable off-road and it's much easier to lift bikes/kayaks/etc. onto the top of a chest high trailer than on top of a car.

    Four doors as standard.

It'd be a better fit if there were four of you, it might be a bit cramped three-up in the back for any distance, but worth a look.

Bear in mind that beyond about 2007 most manufacturer fuel consumption figures are questionable. I'd expect between 25mpg and 30mpg from a pick-up, maybe 35mpg from the most efficient. You won't average above 40mpg.

    A bit left-field here:

    http://www.parkers.co.uk/peugeot/508...3594545753983/

A 508 RXH. Diesel-electric hybrid, jacked up, 4WD, quite rare. I know nothing about how reliable they are, just thought it looked a bit different... And you can probably knock off the extra above £10k...
