New car within the next 12 months

    Hi Folks,

Currently driving a 2010 Ford Focus Zetec 1.6. Great car. Got it in 2013 with 22k miles on it. It now has 105k. Just had a service, MOT and timing belt change. Car has never caused me a problem. I also get 63 mpg which is great and £30 tax!

I do about 17-18k miles a year for work.

However, I am looking at replacing the car sometime over the next 12 months. It will be a case of when I have the money and the right car comes up.

    What I am looking for:

    Tech (I love tech haha)
    Diesel (Petrol just not economical)
    2 ltr engine
Bigger car (I'm 6ft 6 so looking at saloon or SUV Style
    Less than a year old
    Under 10k miles or so
Budget - will be around £20k cash

    My short lists thus far:

    Saloon/Hatchback

Ford Mondeo HATCHBACK 2.0 TDCI TITANIUM 5DR
Audi A6 SALOON 2.0 TDI ULTRA SE 4DR
BMW 5 Series SALOON 520D [190] SE 4DR STEP AUTO
    Mazda 6 SALOON 2.2D SPORT NAV 4DR
Mercedes C Class SALOON C220D SE EXECUTIVE EDITION 4DR
Skoda Superb HATCHBACK 2.0 TDI CR LAURIN -PLUS KLEMENT 5DR DSG (My current favourite going by balance between the kits, interior and price)
VW Passat SALOON 2.0 TDI SE BUSINESS 4DR DSG

    SUV Style

    Skoda Kodiak
    Volve XC60
    Honda CR-V
    Kia Sportage
    Hyundai Tucson

So much choice (which is good right?) In terms of SUV or Saloon/Hatchback - this choice will come down to test drives I guess.

Looking at loads of reviews etc the Superb is ranked very highly. I like the Audis, BMW's and Mercedes but you have to pay a lot to get the extra features of higher trims.

So all views likely. In many ways, this is early days but I like to do my research before parting with that much money.

    Thanks again.

So your car is reliable, cheap to tax and economical. I hope you have a damn good reason to replace it!
You say you want a bigger car - what for? A bigger car for family camping trips is going to be different to a bigger car for transporting and impressing clients etc.

I'm just sensing a new car for the sake of it...

What about a Kia Sportage/Hyundai Tucson?

Re: New car within the next 12 months

To be honest, kids will be on the way soon (hence bigger car) so all money will be going towards preparing for that. I need a car which will last me for 8 years or so. If I don't get a car over the next year then it will have to wait as all money will be diverted to allow my OH to take time off work and cover the useless maternity pay after 3 months. So we agreed that this would be the last big expenditure so that we can prepare for that.

Kia Sportage/Hyundai Tucson is also on my SUV list.

Also, as I spend 2 hours a day in my car, I want it to be comfortable and nice! The focus, while reliable is none of these things. It's functional. I think nicer on the inside and also good useful tech for the long drives- Adaptive cruise control etc is what I really want.

Audi A5? Slightly smaller than the A6, but not in the cockpit area. Slightly cheaper, so go for a higher trim model with more tech. Bleed off your purchase for a bit and you can get this years model with the virtual dashboard.

Re: New car within the next 12 months

Being such a Škoda fanboy myself, I'd certainly keep an eye on that.

Dunno what the new CR-Vs are like, but my wife's is a dream for short people who like 'features', don't use built-in SatNav and don't care that it's actually a pile of mediocre junk when it comes to maintenance.

Audi & VW - Might as well buy a Škoda these days.

Fords and BMWs are our most common brands to be found queueing up outside for repairs, the latter especially being utter pains in the proverbials to do anything on (except changing the clutches).

Mercedes - Expensive to buy, expensive on the parts. Generally lovely cars, otherwise, especially if you're into modern styling. Very good customer service oin the parts centre, though and happily drive out to hand-deliver a mere gasket when they inevitably send out the wrong one.

Volvo - Something I never even thought to look at, but very good by most accounts. Only had to work on one in the last couple of years.

I think you need to look closer to the time to see what prices are like if you are after that sort of tech.

The new Alfa Giulia has adaptive cruise and lane assist as an option, but it hasn't been out a year yet so there aren't any examples of what it will cost. It is a rather nice cabin though and with a lot of gadgets as standard.

But frankly if kids are on the horizon, you need to look into what sort of "travel system" you are getting and make sure you can get that in the boot along with a travel cot and all the other stuff you need for a night away from home with a little one.

Re: New car within the next 12 months

    What about a Jaaaag?

You can get an XF in the last shape, maybe 3/4 years old within your budget, maybe even with the 2.2 200hp diesel. Plenty of space... Portfolio spec has all the toys, although the infotainment system is a bit pants...

Edit: In SUV-land, how about a Mazda CX-5?

Re: New car within the next 12 months

If your mileage is going to be fairly consistent, I'd say look at a lease. You'll know your exact costs for the duration. Just add fuel & insure the thing, Simple.
Choose a term and a slightly higher mileage allowance than you'd need and take your pick! You'll often find at certain points various makes and models come up on utterly ridiculous deals. Golf R's for £200 pcm, BMW M135i's not much more than that. Right place, right time for that one. Usually when it's a run out model or a facelift is imminent. Good way to shift stock!

Bank most of it and keep the monthly's a fixed amount. Hand back once it's out of warranty and then decide what to do based on circumstances in 36/48 months later.

Re: New car within the next 12 months

Well, were it me and my current car were reliable, I wouldn't be making any buying decision right now. I'd want to wait at least a year or two until the dust has settled on the emissions scandal (especially if I were thinking diesel) and until government plans for 'clean air' charges, etc, became clearer. It looks to me like they are planning to heavily discourage diesel, and government's nirmal go-to strategy for behaviour modification is stick, not carrot ... I.e. hit you in the wallet. Right now, it's such a touchy subject that there's no way I'd commit to several years of diesel.

    Of course, YMMV ..... literally.

Re: New car within the next 12 months

    Thanks for your views guys.

I had looked at lease but it didn't look like good value when I looked into it.

I want a Jag XF haha. But I don't want to get a 3-year-old car and to get it a year old with good trim would cost near 30k.

The current diesel stuff in the news isn't great to be fair. I am hoping the situation will e more clear in a year.

If I could get a Tesla for 20k that had a decent range on it, I would jump for it. But alas, we aren't there yet.

Re: New car within the next 12 months

With leasing if you go in with an open mind, not attached to a particular model or spec you'll usually find some good deals. Right place at the right time or be prepared to wait it out.

You could go for the hyundai ioniq.

Re: New car within the next 12 months

I am hoping more electric cars become available with a decent range. I know Tesla is about to bring out a lower cost model.

The Tesla Model 3. But not really due until the end of next year. Which I can wait for if it would be worth it but hopefully to encourage us Diesel drivers to change - the government will bring in some incentives, scrappage or grants towards all electric cars.

Who knows. It all seems up in the air.
