If something is/was broke it was probably me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
checking ebay and autotrader, surely a defender is a bit out of budget? They seem to start around 2k for a running model - not unreasonable if you want one as a hobby, but if you're in the market for transport then there are cheaper options. Discos are cheaper, but that mass of vehicle is bound to be terrible for insurance
Certainly not the case with the Octavias, especially the L&K end, which are more like Audi quality, especially the ones I've been working on lately. Electrics can be a bit unusual, hence advocating an early Octy. Can be had for under a grand in decent nick and avoids the Boy Racer image... because it's still a Škoda!!
My first car was a 2.5L Mercedes and felt like I was driving a boat!!
As a result, I was far more cautious and very aware of how wide the flippin' thing was, forcing me to adjust my driving accordingly.
My second was an Astravan and then I was put into a CR-V, before ending up with my dinky little 1.9 diesel demon...
The problem I find with small cars is that they are too easy to throw around and the limits are met, then exceeded far too soon.
You can still find cars that are big, powerful and relatively economical, as well as easy to drive, without killing the insurance. The kicker is usually New Driver syndrome, which is where I found that a mkIV Golf would actually cost me the same to insure as a Veyron!
It's based on statistics - Clearly more 1.2 Corsas involved in accidents lately than 1.6 Golfs (Golves?).
Certainly on the two occasions where I almost got killed, both were silver 1.2 Corsas driven by young people!!
But yeah, shop around, try different cars. Try different sites, too - I prefer the Meerkcat, myself.
Don't forget the places that don't make use of the comparison sites, especially if they offer specific New Driver policies.
Thinking about going for this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLKSWAGEN...YAAOSw71xZl10T and biting the 2k insurance cost.
I assume you've Googled the heck out of all the 'Cheapest Cars To Insure' articles?
Yeah a 1.6 golf, whilst probably a brilliant car, is pretty much about as statistically bad as you can get for insurance. As everyone has stated, its exactly what young 'uns want to drive and end up crashing.
Admiral have done a list based on the policies they have given.

Another article here seems to suggest similar options, and re-iterates the high price of Golfs:

The bullet you should be biting, IMO, is the one where you drive something less appealing for a few years, pocket the saved money and treat yourself when you can.
I personally went
1.4 1993 Vauxhall Astra (Age:17-19) - First insurance was £1100 then went down to just sub £1000
No car for a few years whilst at uni
1.6 2003 Ford Fiesta Ghia (Age: 22-26) - I lost my no claims whilst at uni with no car, then First insurance was £800, going down to £400 by the end
2.0 2008 Civic Type R (Age: 27-30) - Insurance started at around £500 but paying less than £400 now.
I would be getting something else nice around now but... well getting older and other priorities arise. Hense the other half getting a "family car"... if you catch my drift.

lol, sorry to me they are all just a VW with a different badge. Which as someone unwilling to pay more for a badge makes me far more likely to end up behind the wheel of a Skoda than an Audi
Having said that, saw 4 cars broken down today: 1 BMW, 2 VW and an Audi. I think I will stick with my supposedly unreliable Italian car
