If something is/was broke it was probably me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I worked out that any money I saved on the cheaper insurance would likely be spent severalfold over in repairing the darn thing and given what a PITA they are to do anything (with the exception of changing the clutch), I felt it would be better for everyone in a 900yd radius of me that I swear right off the Bavarian vulgarians!!
In theory, it should be nothing, as VAG get as many generic-fit parts as they can, meaning high end quality at bulk purchase costs, meaning cheaper sales. But everyone cuts costs, even Mercedes.
Depends on the manufacturer, I reckon. Merc aren't actually that bad. Volvo are rather awesome, I find.
Škoda are like VW, but with some actual thought as to how you get to things.
It's not, actually.
It's a combination of things - Trying to fit more junk into a smaller space, so making things smaller and lighter; trying to be innovative and implementing methods that just don't hold securely, or sit too close to something else, or are just to delicate to last; trying to be innovative and making things that just don't work in the first place, trying to be profitable and designing failures into parts that require regular replacement... stuff like that. Some electronics do fail, but I generally find it's more often the basic parts that house, connect, secure or operate the electronics.
BMWs, for example, seemingly require the removal of undertrays in order to do anything, but the trays are fragile and brittle pieces of junk held on by a million stupid clips and studs that break if you sneeze too close to them. They then had the bright idea of running hoses all over the place, but putting the hose clamps on backwards, so you have to take the whole front end off to get the tools in... why do you have to take the hoses off? Well, the brackets that hold the hoses in place are made of cheese, so when they go the hose sags onto a belt or hot engine and rip/burn open, chucking oil everywhere...
Škoda are slightly more innovative than the rest of their VAG brethren, but when their innovations inevitably fail, it's slightly less of a mission to get the bits out and replace them. A good number of their components can be replaced by aftermarket equivalents or off-the-shelf electronic parts, too.
Ford are just cheap plastic and thin metal everything. Peugeot go either way, depending on the specific model, as do Audi. Renault are French and awkward and weird.
5.9l good enough?
