Oh, and we had to replace the floor of a BMW that had rusted through in several places, with the boot floor almost completely gone. We didn't replace the floor itself, but instead replaced the 3ft x2ft "sheet" of chemical metal a previous mechanic had laid in as the new floor!!
Nice to hear your boss can weld, I get nervous in a garage if I can't see welding gear around. Lack of basic skills isn't good but seems too common. I have to ask how old those cars were though? Again, in my youth it was normal for a car to have holes you can put your fist through at around 8 years old.

lol at the chemical metal floor. That stuff is good, but not that good!

So out of interest, did you get insurance for your original £690 quote?

No it seems like that was a glitcheed quote which I couldn't replicate again. Ended up paying £995 for the car and £1560 for the insurance

Ouch! Back when I was learning to drive, it cost my Dad £50 to put me on his insurance...but that was 30 years ago!

Hard luck on the insurance, but it will get cheaper soon enough. For now, enjoy and make sure you get your money's worth out on the road!!

He had me assisting in some non-automotive work the other week. Welding up an external staircase. Good money, that was!

Less than 8 years, in at least a few cases, actually.
Certainly that Beemah was a '13 at the oldest... What the POs did to rust out the entire boot floor in the first place, I cannot imagine. Might just be a rear washer hose off, like on a Golf, but still - That was bad!!

Blimey, there must be a story behind that. Like spilling acid in the boot. Just water doesn't seem enough. Plus, if there wasn't an embarrassing story behind it I would expect a corrosion warranty repair.

Might have something to do either with what the average job role is among the circles in which the current owner associates, or with said owner's other "career" of buying write-offs and having us fix them up for him to sell on...

Many BMW's have the batteries in the boot. Extended flooding with a leaking battery?
