    Re: The Automotive Honesty Quiz

    blimey, it's multithreaded thread

ABS became legally required across the EU in 2004 (July onward I think of 04), though car sof under 500 production and kit cars don't count.

    Question 3:
Answer CAT-THE-FIFTHS's question, afore he has a mental meltdown

Petrol,French, was used in planes, airships, boats and cars. First run in 1902 and first used in cars in 1906.90 degree V and water cooled with aluminium cylinder heads with the water pump and injection driven by a belt. Also the basis of the first V16 engine ever created but was not used in cars.Darracq and RR also made V8 engines around the 1905/1906 period but Antoinette was the first to build and patent a V8 and it also had injection, unlike the carburetor of other competitors.

Interesting how some things we think are new are actually very old. Time to get back in the box!

The weight of stuff not supported by the suspension... I fink. Wonder who taught me that.

Unsprung weight is the combined weight/mass of all components mounted directly to the wheels of the vehicle. Usually any shock absorbers, wheel axles, driveshafts, wheels, tyres, wheel bearings and brakes. Generally speaking, pretty much anything mounted underneath after the suspension.

nearly... can you remove the word underneath.... as it's not always under.. it's often to the side and above too!

be careful with the shock absorbers, because they are often around the springs... so they might be unsprung

This is weight you've managed to put on without the wife/husband/other noticing and springing you.

    Re: The Automotive Honesty Quiz

It's the all the weight not supported by the springs (hence unsprung). Typically; wheels, hubs, brakes (unless inboard), wheel-end parts of suspension (typically the spring seat, often the shock absorber, but not always, control arms), tie rods I guess, maybe the rear axle if the car has a live axle setup.

I'mma go out on a limb and say no... Because I believe that inertia requires mass, not weight. I further understand there are such things as both Unsprung Mass and Unsprung Weight... Weight is not the same as mass, as I was reliably informed by my rather hot physics teacher. Ergo, it's not inertia because we're talking about u/s Weight, not u/s Mass... and her unsprung masses will forever have a place in my fantasies!!

Whilst you are technically correct, I believe the usual process to people who care about it is to drop the hub and all the bits that come with it onto some scales, giving you a weight.

Mass and weight are used interchangeably by anyone that isn't a physicist - the term 'unsprung weight' is really a misnomer, as it's inertia that gets put into the equations and that's something that cannot be measured with a scale. Weighing wheel and hub is close but not close enough, as you've still got the rotational inertia of the suspension bits, part of the weight of the spring and the moving parts of the damper to account for
