I sold my Chevy Volt in June, before moving to the US, and deeply regretted it - no car I've driven since (including more luxury things like a BMW 520d) have come close to the sheer joy of driving the Volt. Electric makes all the difference.
My grand plan after arriving in the US was to transfer my Tesla Model 3 reservation to the US, buy a used Tesla Model S which has already bottomed out on depreciation, then maybe keep it, maybe trade it in for the Model 3, when that reservation activated in March-May next year. I'd buy something as soon as I had the money from selling my house back in the UK.
In that time, two things happened - Tesla retroactively decided that my UK reservation couldn't be transferred to the US after all (despite what I was told in 2 separate stores and on their website); and all "affordable" ($40-45k) Model S got sold, meaning the cheapest car was $54k instead of $40k.
After discussion with management, we decided to drop our Tesla plan. And have gone for a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt - a small hatchback with a Tesla-sized battery.
It's a front wheel drive, 200 PS fixed-gear system, delivering 360 Nm of torque, and a 0-60 of 6.3 seconds (same ball park as a Vauxhall Corsa VXR, Renaultsport Clio 220 Trophy, Lamborghini Countach LP400, Jaguar XE 25t Prestige). Tiny boot, but surprisingly spacious seating (the flat floor helps). And extremely low center of gravity.

I'm getting the top trim level with every single optional extra for $41,507 on the road - and from that I get a $2,500 rebate from the state, and $7,500 tax cut. Picking it up on Monday (have already driven it around a bit)!
