    Favourite oils and lubes :-)

Lo people of HEXUS - car and bike drivers and riders.

What's your favoured lube? For all sorts of non sexual activity, what do you prefer?

WD40 or GT85 for your hinged tools?
Copperslip from a brand or generic?

I've recently swapped back to WD40 on items that get rained on as it seems to last longer than the GT85.

And I honestly have an overriding love of 3in1, the original.

(bear in mind that WD40 own GT85 AND 3in1 but they are entirely diff products frm different mixing systems)

Re: Favourite oils and lubes :-)

Depends on the job and many other parameters, the one-size-fits-all approach can be detrimental, for example I'd never use WD40 for axle bearings or drive chains unless I wanted to ruin them.

Examples of different jobs and parameters:

Hinges - indoor, outdoor, physical condition, importance of aesthetics, hinge material...
Drive chains - wet/dry conditions, temperature static/operation, exposure to dirt/salt, presence of automatic oiler, service intervals, size of chain, chain speed...
Bolts - environmental conditions as above, bolt size, service load, static load, nut/bolt material, vibration issues, propensity to seize...
    Hydraulic fittings - ...
    Bearings - ...
    Cutting faces -...

    etc - etc...

Admittedly however, it's usually it's a case of what I have to hand

Re: Favourite oils and lubes :-)

I have 3-in-1 for the woodworking tools, which gets borrowed when the WD40 is too far away from the mechanical tools.

Everything else is as per the manual, usually, while brand is whatever my mechanic has when I go to nick it off his shelves. He gets far better prices on stuff than I ever could, and I compensate him in burgers and pizza.

Only thing I'm especially fussy about is using graphite grease spray in locks, rather than WD40.

Re: Favourite oils and lubes :-)

In making my turntables, Ive tried a multitude of oils, and the ordinary everyday 10-50 ish oil is perfect for turntable main bearings, other oils like 3in1 or WD40 leave a sticky residue, even the simple sewing machine oil, which is what I started using first is not up to scratch

Re: Favourite oils and lubes :-)

I found a good deal on 20l of comma 10w40 on amazon a couple of years ago, and have been steadily turning it black in 7l segments since. Once I give the car it's yearly oil change in a couple of weeks I should finish off the last of it, which ought to clear some space in my room.

Everything else gets 3-in-1, but with 3-in-1 branded disassembly lube for tight bolts

Re: Favourite oils and lubes :-)

I'm on 3in1 penetrating oil at the moment, since I managed to drop a tool on my GT85 and pierced the can (made a right mess). Generic copper slip, seems to do the job. A bit of old RS silicone grease for things which need a thicker grease.

Car gets Toyota 0w20 as that's what the warranty requires. I might bump it to 0w30 once the warranty expires.

Re: Favourite oils and lubes :-)

3-1 for most things. I tend to use WD40 for cleaning things mostly. (I love the smell of WD40 in the morning)
Engine Oils in bikes, I like the Synthetics. Not fussed on brand. (Cars - I'll use any major brand that meets the Grade and Viscosity spec)
For specialist applications you need the right stuff

Lithium grease for metal-metal joints, door hinges. Silicon grease for rubber joins and long lasting protection (eg pen knife). Copper grease for threads. Castrol Edge for car.

Fancy muc-off stuff for bike chain.

Re: Favourite oils and lubes :-)

(aside from cars for a split second-
I have discovered some horrible mineral/silicon combinations on my gun collection recently.

On my air rifles I always use silcon oil for everything.
On my shotguns everything is mineral based.

I tried using Silicon on my pump action shotgun and it literally gummed up and stuck like glue. Took bloody ages to undo my love! Back to mineral)

    -----

What I'm surprised about so far is that no one has mentioned the ultimate oil for cars and bikes......

    Baby oil!

It has made my life sooo much easier when inserting rods through bushes etc, and pipes through grommets etc.. and so far I've not found anything better

Lol true. WD-40 do a nice can of white lithium grease with integrated straw that's quite robust and easy to aim
