    Seethrough rotary engine

Ever wondered what combustion in a w ankel engine looks like?

EDIT: Space in the engine type. the first 4 letters are replaced by rubbishrubbishrubbish. I would be offended if anyone believed that I thought that such engines are than bad

Really interesting to watch, surprised it doesn't show the copious amounts of oil they get through.

Probably the longest I've seen one run reliably too.

I myself looked at an RX-7 last year but one of the problems with these engines is the tips wear out and a rebuild is a pricey option!

Get something with a VTEC instead, they rev nearly as high, sound better and won't give up after 1500 miles. Just about every part of a rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishle engine is far too complex, with the twin turbos, the rotary tips, and a lot of pressure tubing being very prone to just giving up.

    Re: Seethrough rotary engine

I was offered an RX8 for free once.
Turned it down based on the awful running costs. A shame, really, as that would have been one awesome first car and it really was in excellent condition - I even loved the turbiney sort of sound it had on startup!

Just couldn't afford to run it, though.

You mean an Rx-7 engine. Not all rotaries are turbocharged. The RX-8 for instance is not.

The biggest problem with current rotaries is spark plugs IMO. All of their other problems are solvable through development. They are poor on fuel because those tips have to scrape past the holes for spark plugs. Whilst they are doing that, pressure is leaked, losing valuable energy. Solve that and the economy becomes more reasonable. The oil consumption was not really an issue - use cheapo oil and treat it like a consumable. However these days it will probably cause problems with emissions. I suspect the tip wear problem would have been solved long ago if w ankel engines had the same amount of R&D as piston engines.

We will probably not see another new rotary engined car except as a back up engine for a BEV/PHEV. They can be made small enough and are naturally smooth running

    exactly

my 1991 CRX Del Sol VTEC is over 160bhp and it's done ... waaay over 200,000 miles

    Re: Seethrough rotary engine

Interesting. However, it was Youtube's recommendations that led me to the Engineering Explained channel and that was a deep hole to go down, answering a lot of questions I had about cars and engines, and plenty more I didn't know I wanted to know! One of his videos was about a Rolls Royce rotary engine. Designed in the 70s. For Diesel. Using a rotary supercharger!
