The mk1, 2 and 3 all seem to be much the same cost though which makes it tricky to know which version to go for. The lack of driver assist electronics in the earlier cars could be tempting.
MK2 or 3 and turbo charge it, that's what they recommended.

Personally if there's a supercharger kit available that's the route I'd go.

lol, yeah I looked at that. You can get an OK looking car for £2K, a DIY turbo kit costs £5K so that's a different game

re: New whip - death of the 20 year old Polo - death of a 16 year old Octavia

    DONT TURBO CHARGE AN MX-5

you will lose all the balance! Even with a low boost, low lag job, you'll lose what work went into it... holding a car sideways (on a track) with a car that has a turbo on it is 50 times harder than a normally aspirated engine... every minor lift off loses power that you cant get back a millisecond later when you need it.

But this is all moot AS THIS THREAD IS ABOUT MY BLOODY SKODA

re: New whip - death of the 20 year old Polo - death of a 16 year old Octavia

Anyway..... here the update on my new shed/whip/crap heap

2 hours jet washing on Friday night. Ideal weather for a full jet wash. Every door trim, rubber seal, panel gap, the sun roof rubbers, the sill spaces, the boonet shuts, all the door pillars.. the muck was never ending.

Never attempt to reayl clean a car until you've washed out all the hidden muck. Years of mud, traffic film etc.

Tgen I left it for the night, sunroof open to let out the moisture that I'd got in there from power washing door pillars. Didnt bother sponging off or leathering.. this cars not been washed or polished for years properly

Yeah, sell it and get an MX5

But I agree with the turbo thing, it just doesn't see right. I gather you can get a V6 plugged in there which looks awesome as you keep the car balance whilst gaining power and a lovely noise but that is *really* expensive.

re: New whip - death of the 20 year old Polo - death of a 16 year old Octavia

Saturday was gonna be hot.. their was an issue at 3pm with some pesky Swedes to deal with too, so the dry vac started and it went on for nearly 3 hours.

Always dry vac the entire car before making choices on wet vaccing anything. Get all the dust, all the grit, all the built up fluff OUT before wet vaccing.... I took the boot apart, cleaned the spare wheel well the drug dealing compartment under the boot floor and planned where all the tools go.
TOLD- George vaccum, brush and nozzle, toothbrush and paint brush. DO every door trim, air vent. Pull the seat fabric tight to open the seams up and vacuum everything. Pull the steering column extension out and clean, back in and clean. Open everything, move everything.

That was a biig hot job.. 3 hours in scorching sunshine. Job done.

Then we dealt with the Swedish issue and a a few pints of beer and then back out into the cooler shadier afternoon...

Wet vac time. I didn't do the carpets. They are real time proof that fatctory fitted mats and then rubber mats over the top do the job. But the seats got 3 full wet vac runs and then a fresh water wet vac to finish.
Then the wet vac was used on the dash, the door cards, the sills and even some of the door jams, pilars etc
    Tools
    George in wet vac mode
Hair Shampoo ( I don't use car wet vac.. I use cheap Aldi shampoo... works beautifully)
Sponge and brush for scrubbing plastics and them a bucket of clean cold water and a cloth to wipe down.

    Repeat all areas 3 times,

Leave car overnight, sun roof open, and its all dry and clean

Next weekend will be body work

Good advice. Also, drive it vanilla before you worry about mods, so you know what you want to change.

Did you stick a compressor up the four sunroof drain hoses and blow out all the gack, too?

Common issue on abused VAG cars, that. Leads to the cabin flooding in wet weather.

Off topic: Alloy Jaguar 3.0 V6 vs iron block Mazda 4 pot, so apparently the same weight. For the cost of the conversion, probably better off getting a Boxster though so not for me, just fun to read about.

On topic: I don't think anyone cares how much a modern Skoda weights tbh. It seems to be more about how much you can fit in the boot and being able to name which components are in common with some Audi model. That's fair enough though, I once had a car with Maserati door mirrors which I thought was pretty cool parts-bin engineering. Not sure how a Maserati owner would feel about it mind

Hasn't that always been the way with Škodas, though?
