    Gear knob probs...

    Bit of a random question here: a friend of mine recently drove my car, and whilst putting it into reverse, she managed to pull off the gear knob (no sniggering at the back, please!). I'm not entirely sure how the knob was originally fixed to stick in the first place, as there's no screw or other obvious fixing. My question is, how should I fix the knob back on? I could use an epoxy glue like Araldite, but if I do that the thing will be on there forever, and I probably could never remove it should I wish do so (I can't imagine why I'd want to remove it, but I suppose you never know?). So the question is, is there an alternative semi-permanent way of fixing the knob back on that anyone can think of?

    most are glued on, but the majority have a screw thread.. so not having one is not rare but a pain

    removal of them is only ever needed when changing the leather/vinyl boot if it wears out. When they are on tight, they're a pain the arse. Many mechanics take them off from below the car, or under the boot, where the fame is that supports them, remove the whole thing and then upend it in a kettle of hot water to loosed the glue.

    If it's come off, it's likely been off before.

    What's the car?

    You might wanna get a new one as an upgrade.. it will come with a sleeved section that attaches and then the knob goes over and has a grub screw.

    Nice that you found a lady to pull your knob off, but sad to hear she may have damaged your knob in the process.

    As Zak says, it depends what car and what is left of the stick, as to how you'd go about either repairing the existing knob or affixing a replacement. Might even be differences between OEM and after-market.

    Personally I think this is just some shaggy dog story as a pretext for buying an 8-Ball knob and some furry dice!

    Sometimes there is a silver or black ring around your knob. See if it unscrews and slides down the shaft, if so you may find a grub screw in there, just put the knob on and tighten.

    Most though are screwed or glued however.

    Thanks for the advice, Zak. It's a Fiat Multipla 2005 model. I'll have to do some Googling and see if I can find an after-market replacement.

    I have read that aluminium foil placed underneath the knob will fix your issue. Just whack the knob on hard with a soft mallet and everything will be back to normal!
