MKI and MKII Escort Reborn

Going to be showing my age with this but i guess we all have fond memories of our first car and for me that was a MKII Escort (RS2000) so discovering they're essentially being remade made me feel so nostalgic.



Now i just need to find a spare £80-90k.

That's an awesome first car to have.
Classic Ford's have been skyrocketing for the last 10 years and don't look set to stop anytime soon. I'll have to watch this remake tomorrow

Absolutely love the MK1 and MK2 Escort, a classic car and a lot of fun to drive, back in the day used to have fun around the roundabouts in the wet

Not sure I would want to pay that much for one though! But prices are through the roof for classic Ford's. Capri's are going for a lot now as well. Used to have a Capri 2.0, wish I had kept it!

Prices are mad for Classic Fords, but so is the definition of a classic Ford. It seems to mean any old Ford, even a boggo L or LX Fiesta or Escort which doesn't seem very classic to me. An RS or XR fine, but a 30+ Yr old budget hatchback is not a classic in my view.

It's not so much a true classic, as in an old MKI MKII produced by Ford that's restored, it's a company that's producing all new body shells (£14k), panels, and everything from scratch who will, for a price, assemble them along with the options of your choice into what's essentially a modern remake so you get none of the hassle that often comes from owning a classic car.

It's why they can't, i guess for legal reasons, use a ford badge on the front grill.

If there's not an old chassis number underneath how can they be road legal. A "new" car would never pass modern safety regs if its built like an old Escort.

Good point but i have no idea, not asking for a list but like what sort of modern safety regs? You mean like crash protection, passenger and not passenger (idk what external soft bodies would be called) safety things, bearing in mind i know literally nothing about safety regs for cars.

There are a bunch of modern safety requirements required as part of vehicle approval.
Low volume stuff like kit cars doesn't require crash testing, it isn't practical and would destroy that whole small volume/one off industry.
But some things are. So I imagine this would have ABS for example. You also need to comply with modern lighting regs, though that doesn't seem to pose much problem. I gather there is some head sized ball that gets poked around the dashboard to make sure nothing is poking out that would take your eye out in a crash. So pretty much all things you would want anyway, though some people will take a car that has got through approvals and modify it to make it more 70's like.

But the short of it is that you have a government approved engineer that you have to convince that your collection of parts deserves the title "car" before it can be registered, and is safe enough. Given just about everyone loves a MK2 Escort, there might be a bit of leeway there
