BOM Building an £850 hatchback into a competitive race car
Re: BOM Building an £850 hatchback into a competitive race car
Haven't seen these guys before, good sense of humour. Another channel to go alongside This old tony and AvE. Going to go back and watch this project binky now.

Are we better off just piling all the BOM stuff into a single thread?
Also, the choice of intro music is messing with my head - I'm so used to hearing it at the start of a Mighty Jingles WoT video. :)

I thought it was just me!

Havent watched the video, but surely they would be better off starting from a different base?

It's a race series for that model
Re: BOM Building an £850 hatchback into a competitive race car
The premis of the first episode was suggesting they were going to go racing for less than the cost of a sim racing setup.
They then dumped £2,900 on just the spec parts for the championship....
Having said that, don't think i'm down on this. I'm gonna love folowing the series as they go racing. They videos are good fun, and actually following the race series is going to be really interesting.

The first two races have already happened, if you want to avoid spoilers (not the aero kind but there are plenty of them too,) don't go to the race series webpage.

They did say you could play with a fairly cheap setup, but from memory the full on sim rig they found was £17K

Yes, but that's akin to me saying "i've looked into this motorsport lark. And the cheapest F1 car i could find was XXX million. So i've decided against it"

I know what you mean, and finding that level is a tricky balance. My wife went in the other direction and said she wanted to spend £1500 on an MX5 as a track car. I laughed at the cost, and sure enough after rollover bars and similar safety upgrades it has cost us more like £2500. But still, it is a real car that she takes on real tracks for the sort of money you can easily drop on racing sim seats, monitor stands and wheels.
I have a Logitech G29 racing wheel, they are far from pocket change and yet I would best describe it as feeling rather lumpy. I don't know how much you need to spend to get something that feels properly smooth, but apparently it is more than my cheap budget one.

Next step up from a gear driven wheel is a belt driven one. Quieter and smoother. 2 leading contenders are thrustmaster T300 (£330) and the fanatec CSL elite (499 Euro, no pedals)
For both you'd probably want a pedal upgrade. Load cell pedals available for both. Thrustmaster £189 & Fanatec 229 Euro. Getting expensive. But, not quite real car money.

To be fair, I think it is the maintenance and repair costs after a race that ruin you. Those are more money than I am ever likely to spend on a sim, but it is only up-front costs in sim racing.

I hope that's one of the things they cover in the series. I would be interested to see maintenance & repair costs for the car as they go through a season ( or more)
