    First Car Choices

Organising driving lessons as we speak, and very gratefully (and surprisingly) my mother has offered to pay for my first car. She's been in the industry for about 11 years and works on behalf of Peugeot, Honda and Mazda sealing deals with rental car companies, an larger organisations providing company cars (Mazda6 fodder)

Anyway, I can get Honda Mazda and Peugeot models cheaper, along with services, parts and what not, so preferably a model from any of the previously mentioned companies would be a good start

None of the super mini class Mazdas appeal (Mazda2 = ugly as sin, Mazda3 = large, and ugly). The Honda Jazz is an amazing car imho, mum had one for a few months and its great, quality all round. I don't fall into either of the "Stair-lift owning", "Female" or "Boring" categories to own one though Which leaves me to Peugeot, hmm, french cars I hear you say! I agree. However Ive almost fallen in love with the 107, fortunately produced in a Toyota-designed factory by the Czechs.

What are your opinions guys? I'm still dying to get my hands on a Rover Mini despite this

    Discuss!

    Cheers

    Tobe

My dad already has one, he was the second guy in the country to own one (he managed to get a pretty cool registration plate for it too), one of the company directors being the first

I hate my mums 206, its awful. Now the 107 may be just the same, but I've heard nothing bad about them yet (in terms of reliability). When my mum had her diesel 206, one time it had a major oil leak, the replacement wouldn't start the next day, and a few months down the line the passenger seat wouldn't lock into position so would slide backwards and forwards while accelerating and decelerating

After the number of times I've taken the piss out of hers, I'd doubt she'd be willing to get me one anyway

I'd say Honda Jazz if you're going to get a great deal on one. Why not?

Why buy new? It's you first car - you WILL prang it. Guaranteed, even if it's only a car park bump. Why have a new car straight off, get something cheap and nasty to really learn about cars, and when you inevitively bump it, it won't cost a fortune to sort out.

When you're a bit more confident, then go for the new motor, and should you get a flat tyre or a bulb goes, you'll be in a better position to do something about it, rather than sitting at the side of the road waiting for the AA

I agree with Lowe, find a paper and pick up a banger for less than £500. Drive that for a few months first/until it blows up (delete as applicable) then move on to bigger and better things.

    Get the mini. Seriously.

I've had the time of my life with mine and I've only had him since April! They are so unbelieveably fun for a 'simple' and non-modern car. You have your whole life to be 'sensible' and get something modern and cheap thanks to your mum, so in your youth you should get a car with a bit of personality that'll be both fun and a learning experience.

    What qualities are you looking?

i.e. Looks, street cred, economy, performance, practicality?

You need to know what you want from a car. You also need to know what your/your mums budget is. Will she be buying outright or leasing (PCP) it? If she's leasing then you'll be able to get a better car as the one of the components of the leasing cost is based on depreciation.
