I very distinctly remember our local nick having an open day years ago when I was a kid. This was still when the serious traffic control cruisers round here were 3.5 V8 SD1s- so I'm guessing late 80s sometime. Anyway, one of the videos they were showing was one of the aforementioned SD1s doing 120 down the motorway then 60 through town to deliver a donor organ. If the police were showing a vid of this as an example of their normal work, you've got to assume that the presumption at that point was that it was O.K.
I've seen that exact same video Rave. Awesome driving
In the case of the organ donour delivery bloke everybody involved asked the governmnet to issue guidelines so that it doesnt happen again. The plod had to forward the case to the crown prosecution service who later decided to drop it, the judge then issued a statement asking the gov to srt it out, apparently they have plans to do this. It does seem like a complete waste of time to me, but there you go.
