    some1 help me choose

OK, i'm learning to drive, and doing really well, altho the waiting times for test nowadays is like 12weeks :/

anyway, my first car, i wanna 106 gti, i can afford the car (if i get it with finance) and i can afford 9and just about justify) the 2kish insurance. is there anything i should know before i get 1? like anything to check for when buing a used gti? or am i being a show off and should get sumthin else instead?

I'd posisbly get a cheaper 1st car , get some no claims under my belt , then get somethign nicer a year or two down the line.

by that time you'll appreciate the finer points of driving a quick (er) car and less likely to end up in a ditch!

    A sportsbike.

Park your rear on an Aprilia RS250 [yes, 250cc] and you won't think of a 106 GTi as "quick."

Saving that, again, a 1.4 106/Saxo. Right balance of cost/performance for a wee nipper like yourself.

But you'll have a smile on your face. That's my plan, anyway, with a few more than 250ccs!

Anyway, 9 grand and you want a 106 GTi? I've you've got money to burn, get a £5k quicker car, and use the rest to put in a brown bag for your insurer. Think 180/200SX/MR2.

Nowt wrong with bangers, my dad's been getting by fine on 750-1250 bangers for the best part of 20 years now without any major headaches. My 475quid banger is doing just fine too, I've only had to pop down the garage twice since feb to ask a couple of things

I wouldn't buy a nice car as a first one. I know it's not a general rule but pretty much everyone I know crashed their first car within months of passing, so I'd get something cheap to do ya for 5-6 months, besides, older cars are better to learn some basic mechanics on too I think.

One thing with 'hot hatches' is that if where you live is anywhere like down here then you're gonna get pulled over constantly.

You'll spend more than that at the bodyshop when you prang your car. And believe me you will. Not being funny, but everyone does. Even if it's only just catching a wall when parking or accident going up the curb... You'll prang it for sure. If it's a banger, you'll just put it down to experience and not do it again. Do it with a newer car and you'll cry... Then get bent over for the repair bill.

Also getting a banger means you learn a hell of a lot more about cars. Get a new car and it runs and runs and runs. One day it breaks and you're stuck in the middle of nowhere. How you gonna fix it? You can't cos you don't know how...

As for a 17 year old in a 106GTi, don't make me laugh. You'd never get decent insurance. I can't believe you'd be willing to throw away (cos lets face it, that's what paying for insurance is really) 2 grand just to drive a car. I hate having to pay out 500 quid!

    hi

for a first car get something that falls into groups 1 or 2 for insurance for a couple of years and hopefully some no claims bonus at the end of it then get your GTI

If ya want a 106 GTi 16v...and who wouldn't , it is probably the finest produced hot hatch in the world (yup...move over Golfs and Clio's....it owns you "out of the box" )

    then get a 106 Quiksilver first...for a year....and LEARN the car.

    Then get "the daddy"

me first car cost me £100 a good few months ago (may) and has had a few problems cos i rag it, but i like doing work on it so normally do. only garage bill so far was £200 for the mot, which you can expect on any car approaching 10+ years old. get something cheap with a long mot, drive the hell out of it, then just throw it away come mot time and buy another. you get alot of experiance with different cars which means you can start to find out what you enjoy to drive...
