    Mk3 Gti thoughts...

    Well what do you think of them?

    What should one look out for when purchasing such an item?

    the reason i ask is that ive been offered one quite cheaply.

    hmmm... nice solid build cars.. tend to find the 1.8 a little underpowered for the 'bulk' of body its got to pull around, but really tweakable mota.. and good solid Hot Hatch for decent money...

    what reg an price?

    There is NO 1.8 mk3 GTI Golf!

    that was the mk1/2 and Turbo charged mk4. The mk3 is either a 2.0 8v, a 2.0 16v or a 2.8 V6.

    Right I have the mk3 GTI 16v and DAMN its quick (yes its modded)

    ok:-

    Golf GTI 8v - 0-60mph = 8.7secs Top Speed = 123Mph
    Golf GTI 16v - 0-60mph = 8.0secs Top Speed = 135Mph
    Golf VR6 - 0-60mph = 7.5secs Top Speed = 142Mph

    8v = 115Bhp
    16v = 150Bhp
    VR6 = 174Bhp V6

    My Modded 16v = 0-60mph = 7.5ish Top Speed = 140mph+ Total Bhp = 175Bhp approx.

    The one that ive been offered is:

    2200, N reg, 16v, 110k miles, fully vw service history.

    Doesnt sound bad but its a horrid colour (light blue).

    It may sound picky but i really want a black or purple one.

    Now this is interesting...

    vroom vroom... VR6 are very sweet.... i'd suggest splashing the extra £30 insurance on one if you can find one in dark blue or black!

    Just remember, it'll eat ya petrol.... its a 2.8ltr engine!

    EDIT: Its heavier than the others and its shocks & springs are too soft for it.... resulting in bodyroll.

    The MK3 is a nice motor in 16v form, it needs the extra power to cope with the weight. It depends what you're comparing it with really. As long as it's been serviced well and whenever needed the mileage is less important than the condition of the car. My Polo 1.3GT was over 150k when I sold it and it'll rolling on past 160k soon. I treated it a little harshly but serviced it as it needed and it's not on its last legs yet.
    My Dads MK2 Gti spent 12yrs with us reaching over 120k when it was sold. The MK3 will be slightly slower but safer with far better brakes. Expect the materials and body to last well. There should be no rust, we've had 7 VW's (5 Polos and 2 Golfs) in over 25yrs of motoring and non have gone rusty.

    Generally don't be expecting miraculous performance unless you start playing with it like 3Dfx. Parts are easy to come by, Eurocarparts has very good prices and most things on that engine shouldn't be beyond the reach of a good garage (if you're not a tinkerer). VW specialists are also quite common if needed.

    One thing I would as is if the head-gasket has been changed. Two of our Polo's and the MK2 Gti needed head gasket changes at between 108-112k miles. The 2.0 might be different but it'd surprise me if it was.

    Finally there are quite a few MK3's out there. Prices have dropped alot meaning you can afford to be picky about condition and service history. All the usual car buying advice from experts like Zak apply

    Have fun and if you go for it put up some pickies!!!

    p.s.
    Dad got a MK4 25th Anniversary GTi 150bhp TDi for his birthday. It seriously shifts!

    Im umming and arrr'ing.

    Although the vr6 is nice, it has cambelt troubles and you cant really tune it much more.

    The GTI is more tuneable and causes less trouble

    The SD1 is very tuneable but getting on a bit. Although i do like them
