    MOT quiz time.....

Just thought I'd run this one by you all.

It was used on me whilst I was attended an MOT refresher course a couple of years ago. To the best of my Knowledge the rules haven't changed and is therefore still valid.

They'll be a few questions thrown at you, I'll post the next once everyone has had a fair old crack at the question.

A van driver is booked in for an MOT. He's running late and backs into his yard, Clips the loading bay and manages to remove the rear number plate. So, he hastily get a peice of carboard, takes a Marker pen, writes his registration number on the carboard and gaffer tapes it to the back of the van.

Now.... Pass or Fail the MOT and why?

i aint no MOT tester but i'd say........ a fail? and advise the driver to replace the number plate. Because the cardboard number plate isnt reflective.

I'm gonna be different and say pass.

As long as the number plate is clear, and readable from a certain distance, it can pass.

However, you would only be able to use the number plate during the day, as it doesnt reflect, which leads me to believe that it is a fail.....

    OK, the correct answer is:

    Pass.

The MOT is NOT concerned with whether a plate is reflective or not. If the Lettering is Clear and the plate is secured, then it passes.

    Next question.....

Our man buys a proper number plate. To avoid kocking it off again, he screws iit to the top of the van door. The number plate lights are now not illuminating the number plate.

    Pass or Fail? And Why?

You'd be correct in assuming you'd need illumination at the rear end however, the car would pass.

The MOT is only concerned with whether the Lights work - NOT whether they light up the number plate.

Final one for you - Answer in the morning.....

The blokes boss, obviously fed up with the guy for being crap at reversing, decide to add some additional reversing light. 2 100w spotlamps go on the back of the van. He can't find a switch or a relay to wire them to, so he connects them directly to the battery so they're on constantly.

The van comes in for MOT. Pass or Fail and why?

Alas, it too is a pass.

The lamps are additional lamps and are therefore not covered by the MOT.

Now, the point of the thread was to point out that what the law says and what the MOT says are two VERY different things.
It perfectly possible to drive out of an MOT station waving a test certificate, and be stopped and prosecuted by Police.
