What Sat Nav system

I am thinking of buying a Sat Nav system for in my convertable, and have been looking at the TomTom Go 300 and a Medion PNA300, but cant decide between the two. The PNA300 is about £20 cheaper and has a 5" screen, but I cant find any reviews on it. Has anyone tried one out, if so what are your thoughts?

Can anyone recommend a decent system for about £300 that is better than the TomTom Go 300 or PNA 300? I dont need a PDA and want a system that gives voice directions, 3D map, post codes, and is simple to use.

Apparently the TomTom One has a later and better GPS receiver than the 300. I'm not sure what you give up in return, I think it might be European maps or something?

The TomTom one is about half the thickness of the 300 and has a better GPS. A guy at work got the TomTom one a few days ago and we can't find a real difference between them (I have a TomTom 300 and it's great)

I use the Navman 520 great unit very sleek i have programed speed cameras in it has not got live traffic announcement but hey still a good unit.

Hmmm, I have started to take a closer look at PDA's, in particular the MITAC MIO 168 PDA with TomTom 5.21. I like the idea of the built in GPS. :)

Not speaking from personal experience but i confirm my driving instructor rates his Navman above everything else, and hes tried loads including tom tom.

I can heartily reccomend the Tom Tom 300 for everyday useage, been all over UK and NI with it and encountered no real problems with it.

after reading the reviews, i've just got a tom tom go for £250... arrives wednesday... looks like better value than the 300 (faster software etc.) for less murhunneh - either way tom tom seems to be the way ahead... ;)

Don't Navman make a half decent one for that price tag - and you can program stuff into it, locations of speed cameras for example. not sure if it has a full postcode search though, might be worth looking into.

Otherwise its as the others suggested, the TomTom go, seems to be one of the most popular.

Navman ones don't do full postcode searches. You've done the right thing buying TomTom :)

good to know... might have to get the speed camera install... the wife got 3 points in the TT a few months back (so I'll mark the spot on the A1(M) that she was pulled)... 94.69 over 1.449 miles!!! To be fair, the speedo was in KMH so she didn't know.... ;)

I've installed the database off http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/uksafetycameras.php myself - and thus my TomTom Go 500 payed for itself within 1 month of using it...

Belting down the M4, outside lane, when I come accross one of those Novas - you know the ones - wheels so wide you could balance a house on them and an exhaust you could lose an arm in. He's doing 78 (flat out I think) and refuses to move over.

So there I am - getting quite frustrated, when the GPS suddenly speaks out "Gatso". I ease down and watch him fly through and get the old double flash ;)

Made me happy :)

Tom Tom seems to be the rage at the moment. When I had the Boxster I bought a Navman iCN630 and it wasn't that good. Not sure what current Navmans are like but I wasn't overly impressed with the older versions.

One thing to check if fitting a portable satnav is that you don't have heat-insulating windows (these are common on Renaults for example) as these tend to block the GPS signals. I think that the latest Tom Tom models have more sensitive receivers to overcome this problem so that you don't need to use an external aerial.
