I am suprised more people don't know about Rocket dragsters.
Once upon a time children there was a septic called Sammy Miller, and sammy wanted to go fast, very very fast... He drove a JCB by day[well probably a CAT, so I am told] and by night he played with rocket engines, holding several patents to do with peroxide and silver that were used by nasa on apollo's[think that's right].
He wasn't allowed to run his cars on yank dragstrips as the insurance companies had deemed 300mph to fast and threatened to take away their insurance if he ran[again hearsay].........
The owner of Santa Pod[Roy] being a bread head could see how if he paid Sammy a pittance to bring his shiny new car[Vanishing Point] to the Pod it would attract thousands of poor people to come and see it and he would get loads of luvly muny. The said poor people having to flog limbs and children, to Roys extortionate gate fees.
They would play War of the Worlds and as they faded it out there would be a loud, very ver very very very loud, bang and young Sammy[not so young, infact a bit of an old coot really] would shoot of to the other end of the strip. On a good run the nice Sammy said he would get a nose bleed and then he would know he had just done a mid 3 second quarter mile with a terminal in the 330mph region. All this in the age when fuel cars were still taking 6 seconds to cover a quarter and FrontlineVideo rarely managing a full 440 yards..
It was very impressive...............
OMFG Sammy Miller:bowdown:. I've spent a few hours reading up on him- too drunk now to make sense but for now check the vids on this page:

I think the figures are a bit out. I think he was doing Mid 4's at just shy of 400 MPHQuote:

Those mov clips were quite interesting. The view from the bank was probably better, the first clip looks very slow;-) I had forgoten the countdown. I thought they used to play 'war of the worlds'
