    5 door diesel 1.4?

I hope someone can help me. I'm looking for a 5 door diesel car with an engine size of around 1.4l. It's for my first car, so I don't want something too powerful, as I won't be able to insure it.

I read that bigger, diesel cars are cheaper to insure than smaller petrol ones, which is why I'm going this route.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I want to spend around £1000 tops on the car.

    Thanks

Meganes only have 1.9 litre diesel engines, but a Clio would fit the bill

306 dt? I have the dturbo phase-1 variant, has served me well. Insurance group 5, and fast enough to get around.

My particular car has been very reliable and cheap to maintain, although do look out for the following :

    - Crap cold starts , most likely glowplugs changing to bosch helped here
    - Lack of mechanical maintainance? Try to avoid.
    - Wiring looms on the driver door or passenger doors can degrade over time. Check all electrics work and factor in possible re-wiring, my local garage quoted me £60.

And have a visit to Honestjohn.co.uk for car by car breakdown.

VW Polo or Audi A2 - Both contain the VAG 1.4 Diesel, the finest Sub 1.8 Diesel ever put onto british roads. Sorry, just nothing else worth considering.

If it's the 306 - Lots of Breakdowns...

finding one for under a grand? nigh impossible.

205 is a bit agricultural, i dont think you'll find a 206 for the money, how about a xsara, not sure if they came with a small derv.

Clio's were 1.9's as well, until the release of the Mk2.

Peugeot 106 1.4D is about all I can think off. They should come in at under a grand as the 1.4D's were phase 1's.

No Sensei, i'm not kicking the mats to waste time, they have parted and I don't want to injure myself!

    Will do that now. Thanks

I just got a quote for £1900 TPFT for a 1.0 Mk3 Polo though. Might go with one of those if I can't find cheaper.

put your mother on as a named driver, youll be surprised at the effect. And yes, small diesels are cheaper to insure, but they are very very lacking in performance. Have you considered something a little older? Classic insurance is stupidly cheap even for young drivers. A mate of mine used to drive a series 3 V8 that cost him around 1100 fully comp.

What kind of model years are we talking about? I doubt they're gonna fit in the under 1k bracket
