As much as I generally dislike Porsches, the Carrera GT is an amazing sounding motor.

    Especially with straight pipes:

Saying that though I do have a soft spot for Rarri V8's. Especially where hot blondes and tunnels are concerned:

deluding yourselves, everyone knows the best engine sound bar none is an Alfa v6, this is then closely followed by an Alfa Flat Four Boxer engine.

The Autodelta tuned 3.7 V6 makes some wonderful sounds!

Italian engines sound best. End of

For an engine that sounds like it was kicked out of the gates of hell for being too evil....you need to hear Chris Chow's Buick Grand National Twin Turbo.....

Haha you're so right... Every time I see a Transit it's always having it's knackers revved off it... Makes such a lot of noise

Tumble's right about the new TDI engines too... Smooth sound (for a diesel), whistling turbo and quite a lot of pulling power

It might do, but since we all see one 8 times a day I think we've become desensitised.

If its got to be in a car, then definately alfa v6, however, as for best sounding engine ever, Rolls Merlin Supercharged V12

The Mclaren Merc SLR sounds sweet, the deep throaty sound of the V12 (I think) combined with the faint whine of the supercharger... oooooooooh, nice :-)

On the subject of mondeos and V6s, dads got a 2.5 V6 mondeo. Have to admit i do like the sound of it. Sounds more refined than a V8 and above. Sounds OK from outside on standard exhaust too

Neighbour has a M3 (Straight 6) and its ok, nothing more though

It'd have to be either the merlin (in a Spitfire, obviously, not in a P-51) for me. It's the howl of the supercharger over the deep roar that does it - that and the insanse amount of doppler effect you hear with one flying overhead fast.

Either that or the later revisions V12 out of the 60's Ferrari 312 Formula 1 car. It sounds like it's running on something far more explosive than petrol...

If we're sticking to production cars, I thought the Koenigseg sounded pretty close to a Spitfire on Top Gear the other week, but I think it suits planes better.

it's the whine of a 2CV that does it for me... completely unique, you can hear them coming from at least 100 yards...

A bit like the sixteen hundred flat four beetle engine. Can't mistake the rhythm and the penny whistle tailpipes.
