After Moby's and Butuz "discussion" on 6 pot vs V8, though i'd ask the question:
What is the best/nicest sounding ROAD car's engine?
I'll start of with TVR (Rover) 4.5 V8, or Nissan RB20 on throttle bodies.

Another vote for the TVR 4.5 V8. Eargasmic
I've a very soft spot for the Porsche Carrera GT V10 that almost ran me down at Goodwood last year, sounds incredible... (sound available on Porsche site)
Other greats include the current load of Aston's, once the little butterfly valve flips a t a couple of 1000rpm its fantastic

Pretty much any dual-plane crank v8 floats my boat, the sound a NASCAR makes- or better still a gridfull- simply can't be beat IMO.
The BRM V16 is another favourite- possibly because it's effectively two V8s bolted together? As I commented in that thread, the Ti16 in Climbdance sounds awsome too- a bog standard I4 can still make a great noise. Old air/oil cooled Suzuki GSXR engines sound fab too.
I'm not as much of a fan of 90 degree V-Twins as some people, but I still like 'em, especially desmo Ducatis- and I saw a Supermono racing once, wicked.
I'm sorry but the Aston Martin V8 Vantage has the best sounding engine FULL-STOP, even though it has an active exhaust it sounds absolutely beautiful. I have heard it in RL aswell

Oh this includes V12's aswell? Okay then well all the current Aston Martin range sound beautiful but one of the best I have heard was the Bugatti Veryon with its W16 engine. It's got the deepest roar ever, its actually scary...

I live a few hundred meters from a TVR garage, they do sound fantastic. Sitting hear on a sunny afternoon with windows open and you hear them all going past......and the odd one that floors it
*ahem* as far as "affordable" cars go... the Focus ST sounds fruity... somethin about 5 pot engines i really like...
other than that, ill take a v8
Well i know its not exactly a car engine but im sure with some work it could be converted into one but the rolls royce merlin engine from the world war 2 spitfire, ab-so-lu-te-ly bea-utiful if you want to listen make sure you have some decent speakers and the bass slightly up.... http://www.spitcrazy.com/spitsound.htm

H16 - it has the weirding way!
One example of it..
To quote the wikipedia:
The British Racing Motors H-16 Formula One engine, which was a major failure. This engine was powerful but heavy and unreliable, had low torque and a high center of gravity. Jackie Stewart is believed to have said "This piece of metal is better used as a ship's anchor than as a power plant". Despite its poor reputation Jim Clark managed to win the 1966 US Grand Prix with a Lotus 43 powered by this engine.
Someone else said it is 'bowel movement inducing'.
uhuh. The sound has the orgasmic feeling of a ferrari v12, combined with the horrific loathing of say, an unloved and unwelcome retarded relative, and the insanity of jelly mold!

Break from the norm for me, BUT the latest breed of TDi motors from VW sound lovely... especially at lowish revs, like pulling off traffice lights.... nice dieselly rattle, then the swish of the turbo as it spools Apart from that, either the Maclaren/Merc SLR thingy or that Koenigsegg that was on TG a few weeks ago...
