VW Polo 1.4CL 98 Reg Speaker Help

Ok so im all new to car accessory buying and such. I just went and picked up from ebay Kenwood KDC-W5431 with the ipod adaptor to I can play my music straight from my ipod in car. I havent installed it yet but im hoping it wont be too difficult. But here is my little problem.

I have speakers in the car already, two on top of the dash on the left and right, and one of each of the front doors. There are currently no speakers in the back of the car. Now ive heard that you are able to just put speakers on the back on the tray at the back of the car but I would like to have them actually built in.

    So these are my questions:

    1) How easy is this to do, to install rear speakers?

    2) What do I need (speakers, wiring, tools)?

    3) What speakers would be best, at a good price?

    4) Am I better off going to somewhere like halfords and asking them to install me a speaker set?

Any insight from people who have expierience in this before that would be great.

Usually there will be mounts either side of the parcel shelf, measure it up and get whatever you like. Running wires is no effort, but will require lifting the carpet.

When you say mounts on the parcel shelf do you mean like pre-cut holes? Because there isnt any holes at the moment? Also lifting the carpet how do you get it to stay back down after?

Well, running the cables to the back shouldn't be too hard. The parcel shelf - best to get a stealth shelf and some 6x9s (thats if you are not having a sub). This will hide the speakers from any thieving chavs while not affecting the audio, and also doesn't require any cutting.

To be honest, if you are going to get it done, don't take it to halfrauds, but to a specialist. They will probably have better quality speakers available too, so it may be a few pounds more, but they'll do a good job. Its also helpful to speak to them when designing your incar audio as they will generally know what goes best with what. I mean there is no harm in going and talking to them about it, even if you don't end up buying from there

Personally I wouldn't bother with speakers in the back, just upgrade the front ones with a decent set of components.

if you're determined to have speakers in the rear, there are two options (assuming there's no existing mounting spot either side of the parcel shelf) - cut holes in the parcel shelf or replace it with a pre-cut one (stealth ones have the holes covered from above to to deter theft)... the wires need to run from the head unit to the rear of the car, either down the middle or down one side (not both!) - this will require removing and replacing some plastic panels and/or carpets - it's a fun job if you have time, and worth getting a manual (Haynes ICE manual) if you see yourself being vaguely competent, and wanting to do more in the future), but as suggested the fronts may be easier to do initially... you'll need a crimping tool and some wire fittings (Halfords is fine) and other odds and sods for the dash/panels/carpets...

    good luck!!!

Wow J4mes thanks for those two posts! Right well ill do some reading up online to see if there are more guides on this kind of thing. Any websites which anyone knows of will be a great help though.

This Haynes ICE manual though, is this just a manual to do with car audio installations?

    Thanks again

not just audio... i don't have one, but i guess it should cover in-car video/consoles/hard drives etc, but it should start at step 1. as such... Haynes have a good rep when it comes to car manuals, the ICE one should be alright...
