Pushing the limits of 4 cylinders?

1.8 Rover K-Series 4 cylinder engine. Have a guess at the power.

Two hundred and ninety bhp! 290 bhp!! 242 ftlb torque!!! From a 1.8 litre 4 cylinder!!!

Ok so it's been supercharged and race prepped... but still!

Someone lend me 18 large, NOW!!

    Hardly.

    Didn't the Mercedes 2.5 16v Evo, which was a 4pot, iirc, have 250+bhp from a N/A engine?

Anyway, if we're allowing for 'charging, then the SR20 and YB engines have the game beat. Plus turbo charging a vtec can get silly results. 4pots aren't even being tested yet!

100 BHP per litre is a good figure to aim for. If you're turbo/supercharging you can start getting silly.....

    Look at the group b cars - R5 maxi turbo 2, 1565cc, 430bhp.

Ok, so you have to rebuild the engine after every rally but hey!

Well, my 1.6 na Honda (non VTEC) has 130bhp, and that is quite tuned up (but as it came from the factory). Most of the newer performance honda engines have around 100bhp/litre, S2000 is 120bhp/litre. If we really want to get silly though, the BMW F1 engine in the 80s was a 1.5l 4 cylinder turbo. Have a guess what power that produced. That's it, you got it, 1500bhp!!! That's 1000bhp per litre! Funnyest thing about it was that it was a standard road block that had already done 100,000 miles to destress the block. Brave!

Any car in my eyes should have at least 100Bhp/litre to be worth its salt, I'm aiming for 200Bhp/tonne tho jsut to be different

No turbo, No blower, No GiggleGas....!

Nope, brakes 32mm bigger than standard help as well, as does tweaked suspension a quick rack, sticky tyres and balls the size of watermelons

Nah, you don't need torque if you're driving it properly (on a track)

Well, age is no excuse. Mine is 15yrs old and produces 130bhp. And also my engine has plenty of go as long as you keep it above 4500rpm. Still only has 145nm at 5700rpm.

I wouldn't bet on it, and it'll definitely be lighter.

Honda D16A9 engine. 1.6 short stroke, twin cam. Alloy block and head. Revs to the moon (repeatedly). The engine is actually quite small, apart from the head that is quite wide (due to the rockers and excessive valve angles).

Er.... Torque is what gives you acceleration so even on a track, its pretty important.... No more or less important than all the components tho (handling, grip etc) but still important...
