for the first time in owning my 306 the car alarm has developed a mind of its own; i have a feeling it might be from a storm last night - since then it keeps going on - off despite trying to disable it as according to the manual. tried jump starting it and the alarm went off eventually but when the engine was turned off on went the alarm again. not been able to start the engine since. anyone got suggestions (apart from a new alarm)?
Check the battery, the whole alarm system in early (at least) 306s is shocking!
Also after a while the internal sensors start to give out so if charging your batt does fix it try disabling the internal sensors (holding the button below the ignition barrel on the steering column till the light below the centre vents comes on). Either that or just lock using the key rather than the remote!
Removing the alarm from a 306 is practically impossible, or so Ive been told (not really looked into it).

Had the same issue effect me a couple of years back in my old 306 if its what I think it is, my IR keyfob was very dodgy at unlocking the car and turning the alarm off and got progressively worse.
There should be a reciever box for the IR remote above the rearview mirror.
Basically, take it apart and leave it on a radiator to dry out, once this was done I "insulated" the whole thing in plastic and foam to keep future damp away. Got to love French electronics. ;)
there was a short curcuit in the battery. new battery fixed the problem and a few other electrical faults too.
