Whats wrong with my Ford Focus?

I have a Year 2005 Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec. When accelerating all power is lost and the engine begins to wind down, although with the engine in neutral the engine revs normally. Any ideas?

Not being funny - as I'm sure there's someone here that can help - but if it's a 2005 car it's still under warranty - so get it back to the dealer ASAP

you mean you put your foot down, engine revs, then slows and slooooooooowly accelerates? your clutch is on its way out in that case, which may or may not be warranty work.

by wind down I assume he means completely stops accelerating, as if lifting foot of pedal.

does it happen always about the same rpm?

I cant see how it would be the clutch. If your foot is down then the clutch will be engaged to start with (may be slipping) however if the slipping got worse (which it would as you accelerate) the rpm would be going up, not down.

However if the brakes were binding, that would eat away your power AND slow the engine speed, but from what ive read it could be any of 100's of things, though it is probably quite a simple thing to fix when you find out why.

As already said, take it to the garage. Must still be under warrenty.

I'd check the brakes aren't binding at SilentDeath said. Maybe something blocking a fuel line? Doesnt take much fuel to rev in netural after all... putting it in a gear, it might not get enough?

No, the revs climb while clutch slips, and then drop again as it starts to engage, imagine flooring it while slow bringing your foot off the clutch.

Could be cracked spark plugs arching their charge. I had this on the Ka. Its was a common problem with a batch of Kas during 2005 though I've never heard of it happening on a focus.

I would change gear put my foot down but there just wasn't any power there, it was almost like turbo lag and then it would suddenly kick in, I could hear the engine whining as it got its power back. If this is similar to your thing then it could be what i said.

As stated its under warranty so its just a simple matter of ford taking a look at it.

if the clutch was slipping, more power would only make it slip more, so A) his either taking his foot off - in which case he wouldn't be telling us that its losing rpm. B) the clutch is starting to grip = more power to wheels, better acceleration, the winding down would probably be least noticable - few hundred rpm at most. C) its something else.

Also how long to clutches usually last? I'm not aware of my car having had it done.. (not on any of the many previous owner receipts though i did manage to snap the clutch cable) but it is 11 years old... but it would still be hard to wear one out on a 2 year old car?

100,000 miles roughly for a clutch. I think you'd have to really thrash it to break one in 2 years.

Sounds a lot like a management fault sending it into LOS to me.

Thought so, although mine is probably not doing too well. I have noticed a few times with clutch pedal down, it would get a tiny bit of gear crunching (but very rarely) when trying to select gear, and also quite rarely, second does not give me a gear, but stick is in the correct position.
