Is my PSU shorting/about to blow up?

I recently (2 days ago) installed a brand new HX1000W psu. Bench testing proved that it was quiet, etc, everything you'd want.

Today, however, I noticed a faint buzz in the PSU. It's an electical buzz, constant, the sort normally associated with transformers, electric fences, that sort of thing. Maybe even a bit like a wasp from afar.

It is made when it is plugged in, no matter what plug it is plugged into. It makes the noise whether the power switch is on or off, and doesn't change however much load is on the power supply. It is not the fan.

Should I RMA? The noise does not bother me at all, since it can only be heard (when the pc is on) if you know what you are looking for. What I am bothered about is the smell of burning and trashed pc that could result from it, which would obviously be a catastrophe.

Because it happens when the power switch (on the back) is off, it suggests that it's a faulty connection in that, rather than anything else. Am I right?

How loud is the buzz? I know my monitor makes a very quiet buzz when it's on standby. It could be from the transient filtering stage since I think this may remain live even when the switch is off - a few PSUs I've tested on a power meter still draw a small power when switched off. Do you mean it's smelling now? Arcing would produce that familiar electrical smell and it would more likely be more of a crackling sound.

my old enermax makes a buzzing sound but on closer inspection it was more of a crackling sound, something like an arcing sound. very scary to say the least. best to get it checked out as soon as you can. use a torch to see inside the psu fan grill and see if you can see any wiring that may be loose.

if it actually smells as well as it makes noise, you might consider checking it a bit more carefully mate just incase if somethings wrong with it from the factory so you can exchange it before its too late also if it burns out then it might take some other parts of your pc which would end up costing you more, so shortly I would say just taken it out, try a different psu if you can otherwise connect it and start running with open case and try to listen and smell.

Hope I could explain myself and this would be useful to you.
