Corsair HX520 and new high end graphics cards
The HX520 has three 12v rails rated at 18 amps each. However, I believe it also has a 40 amp maximum rated total load across all 3, giving a maximum draw of 480w.
I believe that the Radeon HD5850 (or maybe HD5870?) requires a PSU with 40 amps on the 12v rail. This puts it right at the limit according to the PSU's specs.
nVIDIA's new cards are rumoured to require 42 amps on the 12v rails on a 600w psu.
So will installing any of these cards with an HX520 be taking it over the limit or have ATI / nVIDIA built in an extra safety factor for people running generic PSUs? Where I've seen the above ATI cards reviewed total system power draw measured at the wall has been less than the 480w max given for the 12v rails on this PSU.
Re: Corsair HX520 and new high end graphics cards
The HX520 handles a Radeon HD 5850 without a problem. That's what I am running now. IIRC, the Radeon HD 5850 draws around 170W of power by itself under load, hence the need for dual 6-pin PCIe connectors. Do the math and that's nowhere near 40A on the 12V rail.
