screw extractor

Howdy,

I've got some of a standard PC screw stuck in one of the mounting holes of a hard drive.

The head of the screw has been partially stripped, but there's still a "point" sticking out.

I thought about

a) getting a file and filing it down (enough so I can at least mount it with the remaining 3 holes in a 3.5" drive bay),
or
b) attempt to partially drill out the sucker with a v.small drill bit (would require some filing I think so I can drill into a flat surface) and either extract the remnants of the screw but possibly rendering that particular mounting hole unusable

but as an alternative can anyone clarify how the below Screw Extractor kits from CPC work:

Try a pair of plyers, other than that I'd get a dremmel out and cut it in half!

oh thats a nasty one, i had a mobo screw with the head stripped stuck in one oth those brass things that go in the mobo tray, to alot of effort and various plyers/mole grips,

id avoid drilling = last resort

Vibration isn't something you want to labour your hard drive with - so try needle nose plyer - hell any plyers, just keep at it, lol.

Theres a sort of kit that you get get that drills a hole in the screw & then tapers it the other way so you can insert another screw to unscrew it. But as already said Vibration may not be good, although if you used low speeds and lots o dampers it should be ok.

Small power testing screwdriver will do it, I have had to take a few duff screws out with one
