    Wireless pc start up. Possible?

hi all, Just been wondering is it possible to start up a pc using a IR Receiver and IR Remote Transmitter.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...37842&doy=23m3

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...37837&doy=23m3

i have seen these on maplin.

Is it possible? has anyone done it or know of anywhere on the net that would help.

Technically all you would need to do is complete a circuit for a set amount of time, for the PC to start up - Power Buttons are push to make, and you only press them for a second, so it is certainly possible.

The exact mechanics of it, however, I am not sure of

those two components will be acceptable, but consider the IR Receiver needs a 12V DC supply, you'll need an adaptor to get it to run, so it will need its own plug. Ideally, you want to run off a 5V supply, as there's an active 5V on PSU's that powers USB attached devices. If you're serious about getting the infra-red startup, I would consider an iMon VFD. I purchased mine for 45quid in november, but im sure they can be had for cheaper now, possible ~35. Spending the extra 15 quid over the remote and receiver combo from maplin is definitely worth it . The things the iMon can do is awesome, including turning on your PC at a certain time, or by remote.

you'll need to get a longer range 2.4GHz wireless keyboard, which is the price of an imon anyway

I have this thing on one of my puters that I bought years back. It's exactly what you're describing, only it uses AM transmitter, so you don't even need line of site

The device inside the PC bypasses the motherboard's power supply with it's own circuitry, which basically opens/closes one of the lines (I think it's brown or green needed to boot)

You could try googling it, i'll get the name down when I get back home

for all the geeks out there!

    267-8330 on www.rswww.com

this is an integrated IR reciver, with amplifier, and ~38khz decoding.

IR remotes (normally) amplitude modulate their data, just like AM radio. But because the data is soo little the carrier wave can be very slow.

something like this sharp package (can't recall if its the one i used) is very good at decoding most remotes. (you can check, but i know that sony, samsung, pioneer and microsoft ones have worked for me in the past).

What i then did was too take a PIC 12F629 and set it up too control the robot i was making at the time.

I also made one of these for connecting to the rs-232 port.

Its very easy, because all the real work is done by that sharp package, which takes little current, and works on 5v dc.
