Question P182 questions from a newbie

    Hi,

Moving away from owning Dells for the last few years and about to do my first every build! Having used PCs (s/w developer and gamer) for twenty years I'm confident about my component choice (P5K-E, E6750, 8800GTS, Corsair 620w PSU, one Samsung 500GB HDD, 2 DVDs, 1 FDD) but not so confident about the case!

I'm probably going to go for the Antec P182, but my only reservations are it might be a tight fit and therefore a little difficult for a first time builder. Replaced plenty of graphic cards and sound cards before, and a CPU (p4), and not worried about the electrical parts of the build (connecting components etc). It's the assembling in to the case which makes me wonder if the P182 is a good case for a first time builder?

My other question is about fitting in a larger graphics card at some point. I'm going for the 8800GTS and anticipating upgrading to 9-series nVidia in a few months. If they are GTX size then I'm concerned about it not fitting. Which drive bay is it that cannot be used if a GTX is fitted? Is it an external one or internal one?

    Cheers,
    Dave

Re: P182 questions from a newbie

well from personal experience I can say that working around the PSU area can be a little tricky especially if you have a modular power supply, it's pretty cramped up there, however if you can manage to remove the fan in the lower chamber (which I couldn't) it would probably ease this problem.
thats all I can comment on so far as that is all I have installed into my P182.

    hope this has helped

edit: it's the upper internal drive bay that has to be removed, to install the GTX......... i think

Re: P182 questions from a newbie

I'm due to recieve one fairly soon. I'm sure it will be easy enough, most cases I've had before are smaller, the biggest problem I've seen from reviews was that the design makes installing the PSU a little tricky, but on the whole, its a case thats seems to be worth the hassle. I'll let you know my own first hand opinion when mine arrives

I't a pritty damb big case, it might look a little smaller but that's mainly because it's broken up into compartments.
It's larger than the dell 9200 case.

Re: P182 questions from a newbie

It is a big case, if you are worried about space then worry no more. They dont really come bigger and a GTX or similar size card will fit no probs. Can't really see how folks are having a problem with its size. The design is also awesome and the middle fan is really not needed, in the test results Ive seen in reviews it makes no Temp difference so you could take it out(if u have half decent fans in front and back) and make the cabling alot easier in that area.

Re: P182 questions from a newbie

Thanks for the replies - now got the confidence to go for the P182!

I'm new to the site and have been looking for a guide on doing the assembly. Is there one? Or does the order in which things are done vary so much from case to case that it's not practical to write one?

    Cheers,
    Dave

Re: P182 questions from a newbie

I have a P180 and found that with my Seasonic 430W PSU, I got MUCH better routing removing the lower fan. Although, it should be a lot easier with the 182 as you have a lot more space down the back of the mobo - but these are excellent cases and really well built.

if you can afford it, buy a Stacker 830, those cases are huge and can easily hose a large psu and a gtx. they are nearly double the price of a p180 though but like i said if you have the money why not

Re: P182 questions from a newbie

I recently got an Akasa Mirage-62. I installed the components in it faster than I have ever before, it was so easy to get stuff in. It has a removable motherboard tray, so u can do the most fiddly bits outside the case, and then slide it all in. The top of the case is removable, so you can just drop (not literally!) the psu in without any problems. The case is very spacious, and seems really well build. most of the inside is finished in black too, so there is no "bare metal", but thats just a cosmetic preference!

Re: P182 questions from a newbie

I looked at the Mirage but a touch over budget. Couple of quick questions about it though:
    1) Which side is the hinge at for the front panel?
    2) Where are the front USB ports? Behind the front panel, to the side, or on side panels?
    3) When door is closed would there be room for the knobs on a fan controller?

    Cheers,
    Dave

If i make any errors with this info, ill correct it when i get home from work! From what i can remember:

    1) If you are looking at the front of the case, it is hinged on the left.
    2) I think they are on the side of the front panel
    3) The front door sits pretty flush to the panel, so im not sure that you would be able to get anything with knobs on it and have the door close properly, unless u set it back in the 5.25" bay so that the knobs were flush with the panel.

    Hope that helps.

How did you remove the lower fan? I'm trying to take it out but I don't want to break it... (this is on the P182 btw).

The one in the bottom chamber just to the right of the PSU ? Its in a cage, move te cage round a bit as its on clippy things (not very accurate description but its basically what you have to do)

OK, took a while but I worked it out. Two of the four clips have little latches next to them that you have to press in. Then the fan pops out. Crazy design.
