MSI P35 Neo 2 FR and Coolermaster m700 PSU problems

    My spec
    Q6600
    P35 Neo2FR bios 1.6
2x1GB Corsair XMS2 dual channel kit
    M700 PSU 700 watts
    MSI 8800GTS 512mb

I have the above setup and when switched on the LEDS light up and fans spin then immdeiately stop. I have left the minimum of power leads in and still no joy ie 24 pin connector 8 pin and molex 4 pin. I had the above system running with an akasa paxpower 460w no problem. I have rma'd the psu and purchased another coolermaster m700 but get exactly the same results. Tried both of these psu's in another system and they work fine. My board has the usual multiple bootups that other people experience. Swapped back in the akasu psu again system working fine again. Any ideas?

    Cheers

Re: MSI P35 Neo 2 FR and Coolermaster m700 PSU problems

I don't thing that you have to connect the 4pin molex on the mobo because your "MSI 8800GTS 512mb" has its own power provided directly from the psu (6pin power cable). The 4pin molex (12V & 5V) in the mobo needs to be connected only if you use a vga card doesn't have its own power.
I don't know if this is the prob but you should try disconnect the 4pinn from the mobo

Re: MSI P35 Neo 2 FR and Coolermaster m700 PSU problems

I have known some boards not to work because of the ATX Specifications for running them are the old/outside ATX standards of the requirements for power up. This means the PSU's protection kicks in because the board uses more power then the ATX standards.

Re: MSI P35 Neo 2 FR and Coolermaster m700 PSU problems

Well decided to take out the board and try outside the case swapped my watercooling setup for a scythe ninja and even tried a 2900pro instead of the 8800gts but guess what exactly the same leds come on for a split 2nd and fans spin up but then stop straightaway! Put my old akasa psu back on boots up fine! This psu isn't compatible with a MSI P35 Neo2 board and a q6600. The 3.3v and 5v rails are rated at 25a each on the coolermaster but 30a on the akasa this must be the problem!.

Nope because that would mean the Corsair HX520W with 24A for 3.3v and 5v wouldn't run it but it would because its backwards compatible with old ATX standards by allowing more power for start up. Therefore I would guess the Neo2FR is using old ATX standards for start up that the Coolermaster dose not support.

But the coolermaster will boot older computers using nforce2 and nforce 4 chipsets.

Because there power up is better then expected its not that this coolermaster PSU can't power up P35 chipsets its just that the Neo2FR is needing too much power for startup then other P35 boards.

Re: MSI P35 Neo 2 FR and Coolermaster m700 PSU problems

I'm tempted to say crap mobo and crap PSU. Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but read on...

I've seen reports elsewhere that this board has problems with newer powerful PSUs, including two users who had a CM700W. I'm wondering if it's more to do with the 12V line - most of these PSUs have split rails. Do you have the 8 pin 12V connected?

Note also that several users have reported that the Windows BIOS utility kills the board and some have also reported RAID problems.

Look at users reviews on NewEgg (1 & 2 star) and Amazon for a start.

Well for a start NewEgg dose not sell the M700 and no one reviewed it at Amazon yet?
Amazon.co.uk: power supplies Cooler Master M700 Real Power Pro 700W: Electronics & Photo

The PSU as said above by the other person works.

Have you tried pressing the power button repeatedly to get it to power on?

I don't know if this would help but with it running on the old PSU disable Quick Power On Self Test in the BIOS.

It's good to be smart... but better to be smarter. I never said either sold the PSU. They both (at least the US Amazon) sell the MSI P35 Neo2 FR, and it is these users that report problems with PSUs.

Bet if you had changed the board you would of said “big thumbs down for MSI Motherboards!” in any case you got it working.
