2x 3870hd gigabyte cards in crossfire ( already got these )

e8400 or q6600 go (can't decide which is better currently have an e6600 don't know if its really worth changin i play games
    and want settings maxxed out)

xms3 1333mhz (already have dominator pc2-8500 but want to change to
an x38 chipset motherboard as it has 2 true x16 pci
xpress slots and it only supports ddr3

asus p5e3 motherboard suppotrs four slots of ddr3

can any1 give me advice on which chip to buy also i need a bios update on my motherboard and just wondering can you tell me with an asus p5k (not p5k-e or pro just p5k and its not the deluxe version)do i just get the newest update

because i see different updates for cpu (i need) another for memory(i need) and am just unsure if i need both or just the newest 1 can you also recommend a good power supply with quiet operation

    Re: Upgrading Again!!!!!!!!!!

good quiet PSU=anything corsair the HX series are great pieces of kit and get reccomended all over the place.

corsair HX520w or HX620w either will be fine but the HX620w would be my choice cos it gives you more leeway with upgrades in the future.

as for bios update, if you download the asus updater it will do it automatically from the O/S (searchs an FTP server downloads the file and flashes)

ddr3=not all it's cracked up to be, so might as well wait for prices to fall lots before you move to that

either processor would be fine but quaddies will come into there own in futrure games when multithreading is more widely implemented and the games utilise all 4 cores, so i would reccomend the quaddie

IIRC the q6600 overclocks very nicely so you'll want to consider a good cooler like the scythe ninja or thermalright ultra 120 extreme (note the extreme) these also get reccomended alot and you'll probably see the thermalright abbriviated to TRU120E on forums if you havnt come across that before.

    Re: Upgrading Again!!!!!!!!!!

Well looking at your current specs

Do you really need a new CPU? I don't know of any games yet that use the quad core
Compairing the e6600 to the e8400, they both have the same 9x multiplier wiht both running at 333mhz fsb (so both at 3ghz, the e6600 small OC, the e8400 at stock) there seems to be a small performance gain with the e8400 (around 5%) X-bit labs - Meet Intel Wolfdale: Core 2 Duo E8500, E8400 and E8200 Processors Review (page 7) (the e6850 is basically the e6600 with a small OC)
However you should be able to OC the e8400 to 3.6-4ghz without too much trouble.

Quick question, what cooler and what fsb are you currently running on your e6600?
It's still a solid chip and may not really be worth replaceing it yet.

You might want to consider replaceing your old crt first. I doubt you'll get much more out of a full x16+x16 crossfire on the relatively low resolutions of a 19"crt
Just looked it up 18" viewable 1600x1200 max res that's pritty insane for an 18" screen, can/do you run it at 1600x1200?

I know my old Belinea 10 60 20 (19"CRT) had problems trying to do 1600x1200, i'd have to drop the refresh rate (which caused headaches after a couple of hours) and it all got a little fuzzy.
1400x1050x75mhz was ok but my old 6800le could never cope with gaming at that

    Re: Upgrading Again!!!!!!!!!!

thank you taktak i have updated my bios thanks to you it wouldn't do it through the internet but it did it from file.

and this is at pob255, my e6600 was on stock clocks, as i didn't want to push it as my bios wasn't right. Without the proper bios my e6600 showed up as 2.41ghz in my bios and 3.19ghz in windows xp sp2!! yes my monitor runs at 1600x1200 at 72 hertz. If i force it it will go upto 2048x1536 and everything still runs smooth, but i am looking to go up to 22" widescreen (i like the look on cibox monitors)with 1650x1050 resolution, as i got to get it up on the wall, as i'm doing the house up, as i'm expecting my first baby this august and this is the only time in the next year or two that i am going to be able to afford to upgrade. Plus i want pc to take control of my flatscreen tv (going minimal)... migt just go quad core

my cooling solutions are scythe ninja rev.b with blue (quiet)120mm fans i also have thermaltake duorb coolers on my graphic cards and was thinking of getting the dominator airflow for my memory..

please keep postin guys as i am always watching my own posts
