3.5 inch drive in 5.25 inch slot!

    Lo,

Right, I am trying to use a Laptop optical drive in a desktop PC. (Don't ask why...)

    So I need:

    1) A front blanking plate so there is not a large gap around the new drive (Has to be black)

    2) Someway of mounting it - I was looking at one of these, Maplin > 5.25 inch to 3.5 inch Bay Adaptor

    3) A Laptop drive port-> IDE or SATA adapter(Preferably SATA)

Does anyone know where I can get any of these from?

Do you think my solution to number 2 will work?

Thanks for any help you can give me,

    FifthFreedom

im not going to ask why, but i dare say it will cost less to buy a 5.25" DVD-RW drive at about £15 than messing about trying to get it to fit ?

considering laptop slimline drives are held in by one screw its going to be a bit of a pain trying to get it to fit and stay in place

Does anyone make 5.25 inch slot loading DVD ROM drives? (Like the laptops drives and the one in the Wii?)

    I can't find one anywhere!

That is what I really want but I don't believe anyone makes them!

Wink Re: 3.5 inch drive in 5.25 inch slot!

Pioneer's 106S and 120S were two of the most popular slot-loading DVD-ROM drives.
TMK though... there are no internal slot-loading DVDRW's for PC's?

There are still some slot-loading laptop drives available - i.e. the Panasonic CW 8124-B... but then you'd have the same problem of mounting it in the 5.25" drive bay

Where are you from (UK/USA etc)? Only, there's an external slot-loading CDRW/DVD-ROM combo drive being flogged on Ebay
It's meant to be used as part of a 'CarPuter' system... but I'd imagine it can be connected to a PC somehow?

i think they arent famous cuz over time the lower fuzzy part that stops dust into your drive will entrain a lot of dust and it could well scratch your medias

i havent used one for a very very very long time and mine was the pioneer 106S (i think) looks cool tho i must say
