    Case Recommendations?

I'm currently using the original silver-coloured Coolermaster Stacker 830, which despite being a decent case, is beginning to look a little dated. Furthermore, it doesn't meet my future needs.

Consequently, I'm in the market for a new case, with the following features:

    - A plain, modern design (preferably black and with no ugly bezels etc).
    - Supports 12+ HDDs.
    - Has room for at least one DVD-RW drive and a floppy drive.
    - Has room for 2 PSUs.

I've had a look at the major manufacturers, but I don't really have any experience of the cases they offer. Can anyone recommend certain cases to look at which fulfill the aforementioned specification?

    Thanks!

hmmm.... dependant on what you class as "good looking" and "ugly" really, cos everyones taste in cases is different....

also what sort of budget are we talking?

    HERE Lian-Li PC-V2010B

    HERE Cooler Master Centurion 590
    HERE Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570
    HERE CoolerMaster Stacker RC-832 V2
    HERE CoolerMaster Stacker 830 Evolution

and i'm too knackered to find any more ATM

(some of these are working on the premise of putting HHD's in 5.25" bays, but all of them have enough space for 9 HDD's 1 floppy and 2 opticals, some of them have more)

    Re: Case Recommendations?

These are some cases that are close to what you want, but won't get all the 9 hard drives in via conventional methods:

    Antec P182 - 8 HDD, 2 DVD, 1 Floppy
    Coolermaster Cosmos-S RC-1100 - 8 HDD, 2 DVD, 1 Floppy
    Thermaltake Soprano - 8 HDD, 2 DVD, 1 Floppy
    Silverstone Temjin TJ07S-W - 7/8 HDD, 2 DVD, 1 Floppy
    Antec P190 - 8 HDD, 2 DVD, 1 Floppy
    Lian-Li PC-S80 - 7/8 HDD, 2 DVD, 1 Floppy

These are some that should get the full 9 hard drives, 2 optical and 1 floppy however you'd need to convert the 5.25" bays like the above cases.

    Thermaltake Armour
    Coolermaster Cosmos RC-1000

    Re: Case Recommendations?

Thanks a lot for the links Erzi.

I've been reassessing my options, and I think I need to future proof slightly more than I had previously anticipated. Can anyone recommend a case which allows for the following?

    - 2 PSUs.
    - At least 12 hard drives.
    - 1 DVD drive and floppy drive.

The market seems pretty slim. At the moment, all I've found is the original Coolermaster Stacker, though that is becoming more and more difficult to buy. Unfortunately, the black version of it appears to have been discontinued, too.

    Re: Case Recommendations?

Adding a 2nd PSU means you're getting into server case territory, or case modding.

    Re: Case Recommendations?

Server case territory is fine by me, so long as the dimensions aren't 'too' extreme (i.e. not much bigger than the Stacker/big Lian-Li cases).

As for case modding, I'm not sure if I'm skilled enough for that.

    Re: Case Recommendations?

Thanks for the links Clunk, but I'm not sure those cases provide the HDD capacity I'll be needing.

I forgot to amend my original post when I added to the required specification today - that's rectified now.

    Re: Case Recommendations?

Both will easily hold 12 if you add a 3/4 drive cage in the 5.25 bays, and they can be had for just a few £.

They seem to tick the other boxes though

    Re: Case Recommendations?

Clunk... As someone with considerable experience in this, would you rather run a system with 12 hard drives + 2 PSUs in an original Stacker (STC-001) or one of those Lian-Li cases? Which do you think would be the most suitable etc... I'm a bit lost here. :S

    Re: Case Recommendations?

Is it a server? Why not go for a server case then? Might work out cheaper.

I was running 9x drives in a mountain mods case (for sale in the for sale section) and it has room for 12-16 total.

    Re: Case Recommendations?

Well it's a computer for personal use and to take to university. However, I need the space provided by that many hard drives, so I'm willing to go for something which is a bit beyond the usual Stacker.

I had looked into the Mountain Mods case when I first built my PC in 2006, but decided against it due to shipping costs. However, I think it's a bit too large to transport to and from university.

Ideally, I'm looking for something in full tower form.

    Silverstone TJ07

It can even hold a triple radiator on the bottom for watercooling loop. Sure, it's not the cheapiest case in the world, but it's top quality.

    Re: Case Recommendations?

is sound an important factor to yourself?

as you could always rivet a few steel bars within the cases to add more storage... or mount HDDs in unusual places...

or you could rivet 2 smaller cases together to make one larger case....

i.e. a whole midi tower dedicated to HDD's and then all of the other components in the other case (i think Jay did a mod like this) as that would give you lots of room, and it wouldn't be OTT big dependant on the cases that you joined together....
