    Post Case + cooling upgrade

So I have a PC that I built a few months back right now.

    The specs are:

Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz, but will overclock later
    8800 GT with a Zalman ZF830 cooler
    Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3
    Coolermaster Centurion 534 case

Now I don't think the airflow of this case is great, and it seems poor for sound deadening. In addition I want to stop using the stock heatsink for the Q6600, so this is what I'm thinking about getting...

    Antec P182
Xigmatek HDT-S1283 or OCZ Vendetta 2 (with the Xigmatek Crossbow bolt through kit)
and an extra Noctua 1200 RPM fan in addition to the one i already have.

Does this seem like a good purchase? Secondly, I'm not sure if using the top harddrive enclosure on the Antec P182 as an airflow tunnel with a fan attached will help cool my graphics card at all, especially with that Zalman cooler possibly pushing air in the opposing direction. Also, is there anything between those two CPU coolers mentioned?

Finally, if anyone has the antec P182 could you explain your fan setup. I want a quiet setup with optimal airflow through the case. Thanks for your time!

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

P182 doesn't have the best of airflow either to be honest.

I have a front Xilence intake, and rear and top xilence exhausts. On my Mugen i have another xilence intake (pulling from the front of the case)

In the lower chamber i have a stock Tri-Cool as i can't get it out, dodgy case from Aria, damaged but didn't want the hastle.

    It's 4.98*

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

I've heard that the Antec P182 doesn't have optimal airflow in its default configuration, so I think I'm going to either mod or just remove the plastic grills on the front panel inside the door - apparently they are quite detrimental for airflow and noise.

In addition I was considering buying one of those Scythe Kama Bay fans to increase front intake airflow to even things up with the two rear extractors, but I'm not too encouraged by the reviews - opinion seems to be that it has very low airflow.

    Thanks for your input.

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

The Lian Li case is quite nice looking, high quality as well but I'm not so sure its going to prevent much sound leaking out, especially from my 8800 GT with the Zalman fan on it.

Looks like I'm sticking with the Antec P182 for now.

You can get a kamabay and replace the fan in it, or just place a fan in there and secure it with cable ties

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

I might do the cable tie thing, seems like an easy way to save money. What fans do people recommend? I keep seeing Nexus fans mentioned on other review sites but they seem hard to get a hold of in the UK. I should mentioned that I'm looking for very quiet fans with decent airflow.

There's some nexus. Bad customer service from there and high delivery though.

Get some YateLoon Low or mediums

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

If you are willing to shell out a bit more money, check out the reviews for the antec twelve hundred.

Downside is that its huge, heavy, and the LED's on the front fans cannot be turned off.

However, great air flow, loads of space, looks stunning, and quiet when on low.

A bit more audible on medium and high, but if you already have an aftercooler installed on your graphics card, and a good HSF, then you'll have no problem keeping it on low.

And yes the Vendetta 2 and S1283 are great HSFs. I've heard the Vendetta 2 is slightly quieter though with similar preformance.

Oh and if you're replacing ur heatsink and want some new thermal paste, check out the OCZ freeze compound.

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

Thanks for the help everyone with the other case suggestions but yesterday I bit the bullet and went for the antec P182 case . I'm putting it together today and I'll see how my temperatures are. I still need to buy my CPU and GPU aftermarket coolers so that should help also.

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

I'm using Scythe Ninja original in a P180 with a Nexus 120mm fan. I use a Scythe Ninja rev B in a Akasa Eclipse without a fan.

I find fans over 1000rpm a bit loud, I may have sensitive hearing.

In the P180, (modded to remove rear fan grill, front grills also cut) I'm using
    2 x Nexus 120mm undervolted to 7v,
1 x NorthQ 120mm Ceramic Bearing fan (this is the quietest 120mm fan I've used) undervolted again around 7-9v
1 x Coolermaster 80mm Blue LED undervolted to 7v - cooling the mobo heatpipe cooler
1 x Sharkoon 80mm 1000rpm fan (Silent Eagle I think) - this is THE quietest fan as it doesn't push any air

I may be able to remove a fan or two, haven't tested fan configurations yet.

Not sure if the following mod makes much difference. I cut them out when I was modding the case (made cable routing easier etc.)

In case you're wondering, in the lower HD chamber I have a Scythe Quiet Drive on foam

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

That's pretty nice. Right now I have a pretty standard setup, except I switched the back-top tricool fan with my Noctua and put the tricool on the middle harddrive enclosure with it set to medium. That has stopped the low frequency vibration that fan was causing on the top panel (nice design Antec ). Right now its fairly quiet but I know I'll probably become more aware of the noise as I get more sensitive to it.

Edit : Forgot to say, how are you undervolting your fans? Are you using that Molex plug mod that feeds some current back to the PSU?

    Re: Case + cooling upgrade

the scythe slipstream fans are pretty much the best right now as they make the least noise for the amount of air they shift, the 1200rpm are the quietest and the 1900rpm are obviously the loudest but if you stick the 1900's on 5v then they are pretty much inaudible and still shift alot of air... the nexus are good too but the pwm version makes this weird buzzing noise if you put it against anything i.e. screwed to the case lol... also you can get molex conectors to reduce voltage but i have a fan controller which is alot easier as it can turn all the fans right down for everyday tasks and when gaming turn them up for better cooling.

I'm using a Coolermaster Aerogate II. A decent controller IMO as it lists the rpm and you can monitor temps as well. Was around £12 when I bought it a few years ago, unfortunately can't get hold of it now - I was looking for a Black one (currently have Silver). It's range by the way is 7v - 12v.

To cut out fan vibrations, I use UHU White Tack (better than Blu Tack in my experience as it's softer) between the fan and case. I feed cable ties through the fan holes and seal on the other side.

I agree with crazyfool, Scythe do make some decent fans (check silentpcreview for the reviews) but I refuse to pay over £8 for a 120mm fan (I did buy a couple of SilenX fans at £20 each some years ago ). I may tempted to spend over £8 on one of the new Scythe Maru fans thought - 140mm fan and has mounting holes 120mm as well as 140mm fan (saw a thread on silentpcreview).
