Time To Put The Old Girl Down! >:0)

So at the minute i'm sitting with:
    Asus P5n-32 Mobo, Intel E6400, 2GB Corsair XMS2 800Mhz, GeForce Fatal1ty 7600GT
X-fi Fatal1ty Sound Card, 550w PSU al in a Silver Sporano Thermaltake Case.

    I'd say you'll agree it's a bit past it's best.
So I am looking at ordering myself:

Antec Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case
(Massive Space for me to play with)
Asus Striker II Extreme Nvidia 790i Ultra SLI DDR3 Waterblock Motherboard - Socket 775
    (From what i gather it's the ****)
    Corsair Memory 2GB (2X1GB) DDR3 1600MHZ 240PIN DIMM UNBUFFERED
    (2GB of reasonably priced DDR3)

Now here's where you clever chaps come in.
I'm thinking about a Q6600 overclocked, keep the X-fi, need a good PSU and importantly
a kick ass graphics card, XFX GeForce 9800 GX2?

And of course do I stick in a couple of my Scythe s-flex 120mm fans on the side of my Thermalright IFX-14 or go for water cooling?

Thanks for the help guys, Mark

Re: Time To Put The Old Girl Down! >:0)

    Why Q6600?

The reason I ask is that unless you are using software which is optimised for it two of ther cores are effectively wasted so you really have use of a dual core processor running at 2.4 gig whereas if you get the E8500 dual core you have two cores running at 3 gig with plenty of room for overclocking.

Looking at the comparison chart on Tom's hardware the quad is a bit ahead on cpu intensive tasks like video encoding, about on a par with the 8500 on benchmarks but in real world games the E8500 pulls out a commanding lead. In Quake IV (and by extension any others that use the id Tech 4 engine such as Wolfenstein and Prey) the E8500 has a 50% higher framerate.

Re: Time To Put The Old Girl Down! >:0)

I assume that you have quite a large budget so let's get to work:

Mobo: Foxconn Blackops - best overclocking mobo money can buy
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=827890

RAM: 4Gb will give better performance than higher frequencies
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=782926

CPU: Have you considered keeping your E6400? It would provide ample performance for most tasks once overclocked. The Q6600 is a solid choice but if you have the money, the Q9450 would give a little more performance. Depends on your budget.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=795731

PSU: Corsair HX620 - one of the best
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=446787

GPU: HD4870 - better consistant performance than a GX2 while saving a few bob
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=832699

Those are the parts that I would personally get if I were in your position. I would possibly wait for the 4870X2 to come out in a few weeks time but I'd be proud to own a system of that calibre.

As for watercooling, it depends on budget again but be prepared to pay £150 - £250 for it.

Re: Time To Put The Old Girl Down! >:0)

Tbh, i would just overclock the cpu, buy another 2gb of ram and a new gfx, with your budget probably a 280gtx or 4870x2.

New case if u really want one, psu atm should be ok tbh.

What Infinite said really. That CPU should be sufficient for now. I'd wait to see what the new genration od CPUs are like and do a system overhaul then.

Your system can;t be any worse than mine after a gpu upgrade.

Re: Time To Put The Old Girl Down! >:0)

Yes I'd agree with others here, the e6400 is a fine chip, over clock it you should be able to hit 3ghz which is more than enough
2gb is still fine, there's not much that really pushes 2gb, yet . . . (as long as windows is relatively clean)

The real weak point is the 7600gt (are you useing 2 in sli?)

An ati 4850 is around £120
    A geforce 9800gtx+ is around £135
An Ati 4870 is around £175

All 3 will be better than a 7600gt (or pair of them) and a decent 550w should cope with them
You may be able to pick up a pair of cheap 8800gt that will be a more than adiquate boost to performance
I'd say look 2nd hand because the 8800gt still retails for around £105
Correction: 9800gt (don't be fooled by the "9" is still the same chip as the 8800gt) but they are cheaper.
Scan have got a leadtek on for £91.39 http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=857905
For that price it's tempting, dependent on game and such a pair of 9800gt are faster than a single 4870 and is only a little more.
Not sure how much the old nforce4 chipset will hold them back though.

have you seen benchmarks for the 9800GT in SLI? Cause 2 cards does not always = better performance.
