power requirements of new graphics cards

I'm thinking of building a pseudo HTPC frontend/gaming rig. I was thinking of the following setup:

CASE: Silverstone SST-LC04 w/ built in 300watt PSU
MOBO: ASUS P5Q-EM
CPU: one of the new quad core intels
GRAPHICS: GeForce 8800 GT 512MB

My concern is that the power requirements are way beyond what the puny 300w PSU can provide - especially with the added graphics card. i don't plan to run anything else on the system except an obligatory boot disk.

does anyone have any insight into whether such a setup is feasible? i've read that nvidia recommend 400w with +12v @ 26amps. the spec sheet on the psu only provides 300w with +12v @ 20amps

Yeah thats not going to cope i dont think, your either going to have to choose a different case/psu combo, or depending on the form factor of the case, get a new psu for it, anything over 400W should be fine

For that money just get an Antec Fusion Black and a corsair 450W VX. If it was a decent 300W PSU though it would be fine.

Well most of the silverstone PSUs are highly rated, but I would be a little worried over a 300w powering a quad core and 8800gt
Doubly so if one or both are overclocked.

thanks all. i think i'll be better off buying a bigger case so that i can pick and choose a higher rated power supply. shame really, i really like the silverstone case... if only they did it with a better psu.

I just looked at the spec sheet for the PSU http://www.silverstonetek.com/downlo...cification.pdf and it says max load on the 12v rails 24A,

Looking at wattage figure a system running an overclocked E8400 @ 3.6GHz and an 8800GT will draw under load a peak of 190W, this will be easily handled by the 300W supply in the LC04.
