    Dell Optiplex 330

Any of you guys out there put a higher power PSU in one of these Optiplex Mini Towers???
They have a PCI-E slot butstd power supply is around 300W.
Also Graphics cards seem like a tight fit! Any ideas about that too?
I hve used a Sapphire 2600XT in a couple so far, but want to go further

You need to check the power ratings on the power supply, the over all wattage of the power supply is of little importance.

The should be a sticker on the side of the PSU which will say 3.3V so many Amps, 5v so many amps, 12v so may amps (you may have more than one 12v rail, but unlikely on a 300W PSU).

In particular reference to graphics cards it is the 12v rail that is important. A graphics card like the 4670 a big step up from the 2600XT requires ~60W so this requires 5A on the 12v rail of course you need other things to be powered from that rail so I wouldn't be happy unless it was a bare minimum of 15A, moving up the graphics card power charts you come to the 4850 this requires ~110W so 9A I wouldn't be happy using this card on a PSU without 20A (probably closer to 25A) on the 12v rail (or combined 12v rails is the is more than one).

As to what PSU is suitable, it will depend on two things, first the physical size you will need to measure the current PSU and let us know how big it is, second it will depend on if Dell have used standard power connectors or not, this I cant help you with unfortunately.

I have found that the Pc Power and Cooling "Silencer 500 Dell" is apparently compatible with the Optiplex 330 mini-towers so that might be worth checking.

EDIT: Having had a closer look on PC Power and Coolings website the power connectors for the dell supply and any of the other standard supplies are the same so you can ignore point two above Also from the dimensions they have published it appears to follow standard power supply sizing apart from being 140mm long rather than the more normal 150mm, with this in mind you may be able to find a PSU that would fit, which wasn't designed specifically for the dell cases. Measure the current PSU to see how long it is and how much space the is between it and the optical drives as this will determine the maximum length of PSU you can fit, dont forget to allow for the cables!

    Re: Dell Optiplex 330

One thing that will effect you is, standard or slim case?
If it's the standard, then no problems, it's just a normal micro tower and any standard ATX PSU should fit (not the extended types)

However if it's the slim tower then I think it's not a standard ATX psu but something else.

Best bet open the case up and get a tape measure out and check the dimentions of the psu

    PS technical doc's here
    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global..._techspecs.pdf

Looks like the standard micro tower has this
    305w 3.3v=17a 5.0v=22a 12.0v1=18a 12.0v2=18a
    max combined 3.3v + 5.0v =150w max 12.0v = 264w (ie 22a total)
