My new case design idea. Antec, Coolermaster - are you reading?

    Sometimes ideas just hit you...
I'm not going to pretend that this is all new, it's just merging 2 products into one, however:

How about having a case which combines something like Sharkoons QuickPort (or Pro)
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=723367

You could have 3 or 4 of them on the top of the case, with perhaps some ruggedised elastic band / plastic strip that you could extend over to secure the drives in place.
Then you simply plug them in or pull them out.

You maybe keep 1 internal normal drive, for the OS to sit on, and voila.

Have them behind a front panel accessible by a door, so you open the door and there they are waiting to be removed not quite as ugly or susceptible to dust that way!

But if they are not angled in some way they might losen their connection.
The beauty of the Sharkoon type device is that gravity keeps it in.

Maybe a wider plastic door / roof on top to keep dust away?

That docking bay would be an awesome mod if someone could pull it off on the Antec 900
You know that hole where the camera or mp3 player and stuff is meant to go.

You could have them vertical still perhaps on a slide out tray/drawer?

Or even little tiny screws to keep them attached inside the case ?
My point is that there remains little-to-no resistance in slotting the drives in or pulling them out. The more doors /trays or whatever, the less attention grabbing this becomes.
    I appreciate the input though.

Oh so its all about attention grabbing rather than practicality Acrylic windowed door and individual activity lights for each drive, perhaps some sort of UV colour coding. And a button which opens the door and pushes the tray out! Now that would be bling!

Implement the SNES cartridge locking mech on the next gen hard drives spec
Could never pull the cart out unless you broke the locking tab

Device Bay was basically this, and a good idea that never seemed to get traction in the market place, even with the heavyweights of the time behind it. Despite device bay being aimed at novice users and being USB interface based, I actually rather like the idea of plugging a standardised 5inch brick into the front of a PC and wish someone would get back on a standards push.

And perhaps a different button for each HD, which raises a flag as the drive raises on a motorised platform, and plays a tune such as a national anthem
Now you get the idea LOL!

seeing as there have been some heat issues raised with these things how about this.
make a clear purspex extension to the top of the case Left+Right+Top, now if you use angled steel for the top two edges you could hide led light string/cold cathode tube to light up the whole section.
For the front and back put in a couple of fans, so you're forming a wind tunnel to keep them cool. (have the drives in pairs with the side of the drives facing forward.)

If your really had the time/money/resources you could make Aluminum cases that screw onto the section of drive sticking out to make them look like game cartridges (knock up some fake labels on a colour printer. )

You know what I'd really like, back from an old anime, (mega zone 23) when the lead character is hacking the central government the has this bank of optical disk drives and this carrier thing that feeds all the disks into the drives (think of it like a speed loader for a revolver where you can laod all 6 chambers at once, but for disks instead.)

Having a system like a vertical floppydisk drive but it takes hard disks instead, that'd be cool, esp fully motorised (actually a tape backup drive would be closer but people are less furmilier with them)
