    Cooler Master - Centurion 590

i got my self a Cooler master centurion 590.

Now to start off with its not a bad looking case but ive come across a real bad design flaw with it. I fitted it out with 4 x 120mm fans 2 x at the top of the case and 2 x on its side.

The problem is the 2 x 120mm on the side make a high pitched screeming noise when they are set to full speed. If i put 4 peaces of tape across the vents in a X the sound disapears. Now this is not ideal as who whats 4 peaces of tape across the fans.

Looks like im going to have to dremmel out the side and add my own fan guards but to be honist this shouldnt real happen.

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

aye, i have that issue with the CM690, basically the fan grill is too close to the fan blades, my solution was to use silicon spacers 4mm thick to give extra room.

I also noticed my fan grills were concaved towards the fan, so i gently hammered it out slightly.

    et voila no noise

Yeh im going to have to do some thing about it.

Ill try the grommet thing my self. You think they could have added a recess to each mount to move it away from the surface giving it less noise. Personally think its the design and the cut of the holes for the grills.

Some one asked why run the fans on high well its because when gaming and ocing at the same time i need air and lots of it. lol , Still quite a bad design flaw in my option. Another point is that no one seems to ever review these cases properly. They stick in low nose fans and don't relay test all aspects of the case. I don't think just because its a cheap case it should have these type of design faults esp when its a simple solution to fix at the factory end.

Sort of feeling a little left down now but thats fine ill just have to mod it to make it work properly.

And that is where you are wrong, you are wrong on a couple of fronts. First when overclocked and running games you do not require "loads" of airflow you just need airflow to run in the right places you certainly do not need to have both side panel fans on high, it is much more efficient to have air being extracted from the case than being forced in to it. and the airflow coming in from the side can actually mess with the front to back airflow in the case which can make things worse.

For example my overclocked E6550 (3.5GHz) and an overclocked X1950XT (and later a 3870) ran fine in my Silverstone TJ08 (uATX case) with only a single intake (1000rpm) and exhaust fan (1400rpm) they never got to hot even during the longest of gaming sessions.

Second point you see design flaws because it does not meet your expectations and way of working. What if they intended the side fans to be 1000rpm? Then its not a design flaw its you trying to do something the case was not designed for. For example you are having soup for lunch and are have the choice of a fork or a spoon, if you pick the fork is it the soup manufacturers fault that its difficult to eat the soup (a design flaw in the soup being too runny) or yours for choosing the wrong tool for the job?

Finally people review cases with low speed fans because the majority of people run their computers to be at a reasonable level of noise (not silent but not jet engine either) and you really do not need to have 8 high speed fans to achieve good cooling, infact I would expect when manufacturers add more fan spaces they are thinking to themselves if we add another fan we can turn them all down from 1400rpm to 1000rpm and get similar airflow with less noise? Rather than if we add another fan we can add to the excess of air movement we already have.

Sorry if this comes off a bit harsh, only meant to show that its only a design flaw if it doesn't do what it is designed to and not just because it doesn't do what you want it to do.

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

No i totaly under stand but when you running the fan on the side case at only (me double checks sensors) 1080 Rpm and they make a high piched noise is bad. When running at 1500 Rpm the noise is a P**s take and at 1890 Rpm whach out your living near a air port. running all the other fans at the rated speeds makes no dramtic high pitched noise (2 x 120 mm Top , 1 x 120 mm back , 1 x 120mm Front).

Its only the 2 x 120 mm side fans that make the noise. the two top 120 MM fans that vent the air out of the top are fine as is the back and front 120 MM fans.

so its a design flaw. Plus after a bit of google resurch im not the only other one with this problem there are loads.

so its not me its the badly designed pannel.

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

My appologies then when you said high speed fans I assumed 1600+rpm if its making a lot of noise at 1100rpm then yeah I can't imagine they were thinking people are going to use 800rpm fans so I accept your design flaw assessment.

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

Well I'll start off by adding reviewers never add extra fan, they only ever review with fans that come with the case.

I do think it's a bad design, mainly because the upper side fan shouldn't be there, if you want decent cpu cooling for overclocking then you want an aftermarket cooler and most are too large to allow you to add a fan there.
If you're useing a stock cooler then adding that upper side panel fan is going to disrupt air flow, as the air going in will be sucked stright out by the rear and top fans and that will effectively reduce the amount of air being pulled through the case.

I've never seen this problem reported before (I'm not saying I don't belive you) just not heard of this before.
If you've not got the same problem with the lower fan then it may be that upper grill wasn't machined/finished as well or that it's the additional air flow from the top and rear fan that's causeing the turblence.

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

here you go a demo on just 1/2 speed ...

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jXSG6mYQ53Y

ill be removing the fans now any way as per your advice.

Just to add all the fans are the same and they worked out side of the case no problem.

The reason for using the fans in the first place is cos im running a over clocked xp 2000 in it. The stats on my profile are for my arcade system ive built. My main rig is my XP 2000 and it seems to knock out some heat.

another thing is when you view the vids about cooler master products the guy who represent the cases even says the idea being able to move the fan speeds up when playing games and down when using multi media. Fair enough hes talking about another case but why release a substandard product in the first place and then make more variation of the same case.. eg the cm 690

if you look carefully, I can see that your fan grills are concaved towards the fan just like mine, get some cloth and a hammer, side panel on the floor black side down and gently hit the fan grill all over, and then put some space between the panel and fan.
If you use nut/bolts then some washers will work, if you use screws then tighten the screws all the way, then loosen them.

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

i think to be honest ill just remove them to cover my ass. Im not running a high end rig (not yet anyway). I can understand the concept of the air flow from the CPU fan being messed up because the 120mm fan is directly above it.

What i will do though to add more air flow is add a second 120mm fan to the front, giving it 2 x 120mm at the front , 1 x 120mm at the back and 2 x 120 mm at the top. The side vents then will just be used to help draw in the air.

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

Yeah I would do what your suggesting, balancing airflow is a tricky business and as I said earlier better to be sucking more out than pushing more in. 2 front fans and 3 rear/top exhausts should be plenty.

As an aside (but related) my brother has the CM690 with the windowed side panel and has a fan on that (lower section) it offers comparable noise to the other identical fans in the case so they seem to have it sorted on that panel.

was thinking of windowing it but to be honest im starting to like the idea of every thing hidden and no lights. This system will be my main rig until i get the replacements such as a media server and a new full PC system. It will be in my living room and the quieter and less Lights the better.

I only bought the case as i won another one (same one cm590) in readers drives from CPC and i handed that across with all the hardware i won to some one who needed a system more than me. lol the irony of it all ... Next time ill not go for looks..

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

Well the main reasons I can see for the 590 are a few tweeks/improvements/user asked for features.

    Changes are:
    More simple styling
Changed to location of usb&sound ports to the front of the case
Easier installation of additional front fans
    Removal of bottom case fan
Side panel and top fan vents changed to also be able to use 140mm fans
Hard drive cage replacing custom tray mounts (I've seen a few complaints about the 690 tray system because people seemed to want a standardised one for modding, although I like the 690 one)
motherboard position lowered slightly (I think not 100% sure about this)

If you want the side panel with window, they are interchangeable and coolermaster do sell them separately

ill be removing the fans now any way as per your advice.

Offhand that whine noise sounds like vibration, what fans are you using btw?
If it is vibration then it'll show up more on the side panel as it is a far larger resonance board.
Although that still doesn't rule out a lower quality machining/finishing which could be causing the grill to vibrate as air is drawn through it.
Actually if the whine is removed by blocking part of the grill and restricting the air flow then grill resonance is more likely than fan vibration.

PS Do you mean an old socket A Athlon XP 2000 ? if so what have you got it clocked too?

Re: Cooler Master - Centurion 590

Yip is a Old socket A (now you making me feel real old lol) Its running Just short of 2 Ghz and ill be buying a another Processor soon off one of the lads in the forums and sticking in a mobile version so that i can get it past 2Ghz, so i can play a few games on it. Though its not my OC'ing skill in questions here lol.

Temps are around nice toasty 55c / 70c (depending on what im doing and ambient temps).

I cannot remember the name of the HFC i think its a Thermal Take Volcano or some thing like that. Its does have as5 compound on. The temps about normal for for this cpu if i remember correctly (going back a few years).

    The fans are ->

    120mm dfc802512m (no there not 80mm lol) - DC 12v - 1.6w - brushless fan

RPMs 1000/1800 run on a Sun flower fan master.
