    Can my CPU go fanless?

    Hi folks

I'm looking for a quiet CPU cooling solution for my current setup, which is as follows:

    Case: Antec P182

    Motherboard: MSI P35 Platinum

    CPU: E6600
    RAM: 4GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500

Pros: The CPU sits in the firing line of 2x92mm case fans. CPU/RAM isn't overclocked and don't intend to.
Cons: Due to design of motherboard, there isn't much clearance between CPU and the chipset pipes.

So, I'm after a quiet/efficient cooling solution, that won't bust the bank - of course

    Thanks in advance!

Re: Can my CPU go fanless?

If you can find one a Scythe Mine, the 100mm fan it comes with a very quiet and it's very easy to swap out for any fan up to 140mm.

Or near enough any half decent cooler that uses a 120mm fan

Consider you have a HD4850 in your machine, doesn't matter if you fanless or use a really slow fan, the GPU fan will pretty much sound louder.

Plans are already afoot to silence that infernal component

Good point on the 120mm fan thing, my mistake

I've owned a Scythe before and while the performance was outstanding, getting the thing in and out of the case left me frustrated, annoyed and bloody! What other coolers use 120+ fans?

Re: Can my CPU go fanless?

A vote for the Tuniq Tower here. Sits high above the heatsinks surrounding the CPU and can be used fanless or u can use the included fan and fan controller turned down to almost 0rpm to excellent effect at zero noise. It will fit in ur case but be aware u will have to remove the motherboard from the case to fit it.

It would also be worth considering the AC Freezer 7 Pro at ~£16 as this will be perfectly effective, is smaller than the TT and also near silent and comes with a PWM fan.

OCZ Vendetta (re-badged from Xigmatek) has a fan, but is said to run so slow (especially the version 2) that it is effectively silent, or can be turned off.

Re: Can my CPU go fanless?

I have a TRUE-120 extreme, in a P180 mini. The fan is a Scythe SFlex 1200rpm fan. The CPU is a Q9300 oc'ed to 3.0 GHz. I can run it fanless, thanks to the 120mm and 140mm fans, but I notice that the loudest component is my Antec NeoHE 500W PSU. YMMV but generally the CPU fan is barely noticeable unless you run some benchmarking program in a loop

Now the real fun is having NO fans at all in the PC

Well I'm down to 1 fan now. SUGO SG03 + NT06-E CPU cooler, just vented through the 120mm fan on the PSU. Have taken my X1950XT (passive with AC-S1) out and unplugged the front 2x120mm fans that were running, but on-board graphics are fine for browsing the web and a bit of Age of Mythology...

Re: Can my CPU go fanless?

Well a while back now Zalman did a very good fanless case, the whole thing was designed to work as a heatsink, with heatpipe coolers that connected the cpu and gpu to the case. It came with a special psu that did the same.
I had a nose at it when I poped into yoyo-tech, it looked great, but it had a very high pricetag (£450 I think)

Are we allowed to post links to other forums ? If so, here is my build ... http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...050640&page=24

Completely fanless and consumes 35W when idle, 60W max when watching DivX movies with FFDShow filters - or even when doing H.264 decoding.

There are lots of details on making the p182 very quite over on spcr, the main point is you'll have to focus on all the components in your pc not just the cpu cooler.

Re: Can my CPU go fanless?

Thanks to all for the advice! I opted for the Freezer 7 Pro. It's not as noisy as the stock fan, but when I benchmark the CPU it does hit 70C with all fans on full... On the upside the idle temp is between 37 and 40, depending on what stealth processes Vista decides to run for no apparent reason!

I've added an extra 120mm intake fan to the front of the case so it has pretty good airflow now. Results are satisfactory, but I hoped for better (less noise). To answer my own question, this PC _cannot_ go fanless lol
